because there are some different points between the drama and the novel. in the novel, he knew after connecting clues from investigating "Madam Xu" a.k.a He Yan before rebirth, like before she died her husband concubine said general feihong to her (and the maid of xu household heard it), and he rufei and her birthday are on the same day (spring equinox). Yeah, I don't really like the change of the character. Because I like the character Lin Shuanghe because he knew earlier that he yan is a woman than Cheng Lisu in the novel (Cheng Lisu only know when He Yan came back to the capital with Xiao Jue). And also they're not including character Shen Muxue, female physician who likes xiao jue and followed him to yezhou garrison (in the drama they changed it to Song Taotao, I was surprised at first, because that was supposed to be shen muxue). But I kinda like that they're not including shen muxue because she'd be the SFL :")) (she's kinda quite annoying when she knows that he yan is a female).

But even when I read the novel, I feel like Chu Zhao doesn't even like He Yan. I mean, even when the emperor granted marriage to he yan and xiao jue, he shamelessly proposed to he yan and when she asked why he said "because I love you". I didn't feel like he was sincere when he said that, he just wanted to annoy xiao jue.
