as an adaptation, 1/10. As a stand-alone film 4 or 5/10. It's honestly a generic post apocalpytic fantasy film but even if i dont compare it to the novel there are still a lot of plot holes that I notice or things that doesnt make sense even in an enclosed context. For example, the whole narrative about YJH chance to die against the dragon, so your telling me a YJH who has already regressed too many times given how many weapons he has and how Bihyeong sees him as a threat would not know how to beat the fire dragon without dying? Even if you say that he is curious about KDJ, he can just let KDJ destroy the core and just revive him... He surely knows that the fire dragon's reward is revival of somebody else right? Why would he in this context try to gamble, when only in this regression has he seen KDJ. Talking about this regression, is nobody else wondering how KDJ knows what exact regression YJH is in this current time?? If you read the novel you would know that KDJ didn't have any idea until the theatre dungeon when he realized this was the regression where YJH gives up and dies to the boss here but in the movie they rarely interacted yet KDJ was 100% sure that this is the regression where he dies to the fire dragon (when he doesnt even have a copy of the novel..is he some type of genius with photographic memory here?). And the ONLY REASON why the fire dragon even appeared is because KDJ and his crew survived without the zones which angered the Dokkaebi in charge, so again why is this the regression where YJH dies to the dragon if this situation only occured because of KDJ's intervention???????? Don't even get me started with the power system, so your telling me that lvl 10 stats was able to make KDJ top-tier? We know this isnt the limit considering Bihyeong's warning. So why would he not just use the 100k coins he got to boost his stats again instead of giving it to pildu for no reason at all (also why would Bihyeong give him the 100k which was the donation to his stream and not something KDJ owns, you know the whole reason why he agreed to partner with KDJ since he believes KDJ can bring him donations to UPGRADE HIS OWN STREAM RANK?????). Pildu in this context does not need use coins to power his ability (at least they dont tell us it does, see how just giving little explanations gives the viewer reason to believe why a char does an action), so given this context where there's no green zone, there's no reason for pildu to not help in defending/using his ability. Oh i almost forgot, how about the half-monster half-human that LJH killed, how in the world does it makes sense that he can just freely cross zones. If LJH is not there (why is she even in the outskirt of the zone to begin with?? very convenient), is that specific station scenario just unclearable?
There's a bunch of thess things throughout the movie, but i just focused in the last act since I really hated that part of the movie and it just doesnt make sense to me. For me its a movie to watch if you just want to turn off your brain or a background movie that you barely pay attention to. Even then I would rather watch a kids movie since I know that I can expect that somethings would just not make sense
w8 what??? the list I made is literally just changes, meaning the "element" still exist within the film, albeit in a different manner. Skills for example, instead of being innate and just something you can acquire, they tied it to be only given by sponsors. The removed parts (hidden scenario) is changed to the fire dragon fight, where in this would it make it longer, they could have easily changed the entire last act of film to just follow the novel instead of them opting to do all the sequences about KDJ trauma when they can insert that in a later movie(which was like 10 min of the film, this was like snippets in the source to build up the tension to the eventual reveal of it all during a later arc). The only reason why my list is long is that I gave context on why the change doesn't make sense in the grand scheme of things and how it can affect future MAJOR plot lines. If they explained things such as skills, sponsors, cons stream, that would add what?? like 5-10 mins. It's not gonna be convoluted as these things are only properly explained and delved into deeply in later chapters on what they truly mean.
I don't think most expected a 1-1 adaptaion of the novel, but at least make the changes you're making make sense. For example, the KDJ and YJH's personality, their goal, their motivation, what drives them, or the rules of the world your adapting. These are little details that they choose to change that don't really make a longer movie.
I will always say this, the only reason why they changed the last act is cause of budgeting issues and the lack of LJH actress's time to properly film anything, evidenced by the fact that most of her scenes are just solo shots, literally just sitting/standing. They wanted her fame (most of the cast fame really) but couldn't execute anything properly cause of budgeting and filming time issues
this pretty much cover a lot of details, i don't agree with all the details, but 90%. The only problem is that this doc is made for fans, so a lot of things aren't explained properly since the assumption is the one reading this has some knowledge of the context. Also pretty sure there's a bunch of comments here like months ago stating what was different from the source, you have to scroll down a lot, though.
If you don't want to read the doc, these are the diff that i can remember... It's been months since I watched the movie):
1. KDJ viewing the novel as something that kept him going and loving its ending and even willing to pay to read its epilogue -> KDJ hating the novel ending and saying he can write a better ending (from a reader to writer-esque)
2. YSA being viewed by KDJ as the protagonist of the current life since she is "perfect" and even managed to land a perma contract -> YSA being fired from the job, making the whole narrative about KDJ comparing himself to her moot
3. The novel's ending isn't discussed in the source but we know that if YJH dies, the current world still continues to progress as is -> The ending of the novel is that only YJH lives, and if he ever dies, the current world would disintegrate...kind of like the whole plot of D vs W about anchor person
4. Attributes, skills, constellation, streams, etc, are like a major plot point of the novel -> all of this being glossed over/barely mentioned and even removed (attributes don't exist), skills are tied to things that only the sponsor can give for some reason
5. Speaking of skills, the only reason why KDJ can even be an "equal" to YJH is because of his innate skills: a. Copy of the Novel - pretty much what it says, allows him to read the novel. b. Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint (ORV) - namesake of the novel and allows him to see simple thoughts and predict actions. if he knows the char deeply, he can know specific thoughts, and also allows him to see from a 3rd person point of view (1st person view if the kdj is dying/close to dead, after returning, he acquires one of their skills). This kinda give him a low omniscience c. Bookmark - allows him to copy skills of char he understands deeply d. Character List - allows him to view attributes of others, see their sponsor, even see if their character of the novel since people like YSA, gilyoung, etc are not part of the novel world. There are similar skills to other people but its a really rare skills that only a few have e. 4th wall - arguably his most important skills that allows him to still view the world as a novel (sinc eany person would be affected to killing people, despair of an apocalyptic world, etc.), protect him from mental attacks, prevent other's and himself from viewing his attribute window (character list), hides his true face (implied to be what KDJ desires as to fade into the background as a reader, also is the reaason for his nickname "Ugliest King" and why novel characters sees his face as distorted/static), its also a separate entity/char, and many more -> Since skills are tied to a sponsor and KDJ doesn't have one, he does not have ANY SKILLS and makes you wonder how he is able to contend with other people (especially YJH who has hundreds of skills and stats through the roof), meanwhile KDJ only has lvl 10 on every stats and even then, Bihyoung warns him to not fight YJH after escaping the water monster's stomach saying something along the lines that KDJ stats don't even compare to YJH... It's like comparing a lvl 100 boss when you're still lvl 1
6. The author tls123 actually a normal person (his/her real identity is later revealed but it's a major plot twist) -> the author is shown to be somewhat a constellation-esque entity
7. KDJ not caring for the survival of those he does not view as a companion, seen as he was willing to jsut throw the ant (grasshoper) that gilyoung had in the train to the ground to create chaos -> KDJ being made into the typical "save everybody" type char in the first few minutes, which is also inconsistent with later parts of the movie
8. Guns are COMPLETELY irrelevant and do close to no damage since the power system of ORV relies on stories, and guns are still "new" in history, thus, not having enough story power -> Being prominent in the movie for some reason.
9. JHW was not even mentioned in the novel that KDJ read, as she most likely died if KDJ did not rescue her. Her existence in the story implies that there are probably a lot more characters that died early on in the novel that KDJ read that had massive potential like JHW. This creates a new element that is unpredictable to even KDJ, who knows the story very well so there miht or might not be another character later on that can be a massive threat that KDJ has no idea how to contend with, which can happen due to his and other non-novel characters' actions> JHW being KDJ's favorite character.
10. KDJ personality/attitude is being confident since he knows a lot of what's about to happen, and planning 10 steps ahead on how to tackle each scenario -> KDJ being shown as a coward/afraid of things and is just following what's happening in the story without planning anything
11. LJH sponsor is Yi Sun-Sin, which allows her to be proficient in sword and also almost unbeatable in naval combat. This is important since her most prominent character development in the early chapter is in the Hidden scenario during the green zone that happens to be a story where she is the only one who can save the cast -> LJH using a sniper (which again is useless if we follow the source power system) and the hidden scenario is completely removed. [Notice how in the movie, sponsors aren't really talked about]
12. Speaking of hidden scenarios, these are like scenarios within a main scenario. Completing this is a huge power boost and is constantly mentioned/ used in the novel to allow KDJ to catch up to the prowess of YJH. Every arc basically has hidden scenarios -> No mention of Hidden scenarios at all
13. KDJ trauma is associated with his mother and a major plot point and character development in later parts when he meets his mother and finally confronts his trauma and his skill 4th wall almost broke because of this (the 4th wall also weaken in a lot of situation when there are things that would remind him of the real world such as seeing his bully in highschool) -> KDJ trauma is associated with being a "bully" that led to his friend's death despite one of his backstory in the source is being being a victim of bullying that made him become closed-off and start reading the novel as an escapism and also this means that the entire plot line about his mother later on is most likely removed/ hard to adapt.
14. Talking about the ending portion of the movie: In the novel this would end during the hidden scenario where the stake is YJH supposedly trying to give up since he can just reincarnate and KDJ needing to intervene so this does not happen. The boss here uses mental attack, which YJH is vulnerable against, and it was a brainwashed YJH vs the cast and this end when KDJ's 4th wall prevented the mind control of the boss -> the whole fighting the fire "dragon" and the only similarities is the possibility of YJH's death. Also KDJ did give pildu coins but in exchange for something/contract, not like in the movie where he just gives him every coin he has for some reason just to protect everybody in the station (again, this is a contrast to his personality in the novel vs movie)
15. The "King of NO Killing" is a title that literally is only acquirable by doing what it says, NOT KILLING ANYBODY for an entire scenario, and its effect is to allow the theoretically infinite revival OF THE USER and is a reward for the next scenario past the green zone. This was a huge plot reveal since this scenario was Human vs Humans, unlike the previous scenarios where the main goal was just to survive. It's such a rare title since the condition is so specific and hard to accomplish during this scenario -> Being a reward for defeating the fire dragon for some reason and allowing the revival of another person. (This title is one of the reason why KDJ is memed in the community as the Suicidal king and his apparent solution to any scenario is "Imma go out and die, see you in a few days")...
[There's an actual fire dragon but it's in a later scenario and the King of No Killing is acquired during this "fight"... The difference is that to acquire the title, KDJ did not have to kill the dragon but only needed fulfill the condition of the scenario "planting a flag" which gave him the title and subsequently got killed by the fire dragon, thus showing us immediately the effect of the title . The dragon is eventually killed but only with a combination of Unbreakable faith (unlike the movie its not a deus ex-machina one-shot sword, instead can only boost stats/conversion of properties) + Certain item/pills + getting a skill from YJH through ORV after "dying" (which movie KDJ did not have) + stigma of a constelation (stigmas are special skills that can only be acquired through a sponsor, for example YJH's stigma is Regression. That tells you how overpowered this can be) + having a safe zone that can let peoples survive since it wasn't supposed to be killable during the early scenario (except maybe YJH), see how a lot things that were needed to even barely stand a chance against the dragon aren't part of the movie. Notice how it says "King of", that's because the next few scenario literally revolves around people trying to become a king of something and those who follow them by occupying at least 10 stations. This is supposed to culminate in a battle between kings to know which king rules above all. All this plot line makes no sense if KDJ already has the title 20 chapters before it even is supposed to occur/available. I think they were planning to spin it along the line of "the other king also acquired it by beating other dragon or something like that," but that would mean deleting another 30-50 chapter worth of story.]
This is the few things I can remember, there are also a lot of details that would affect character development and interactions later on but this would be 10x in length if I try to delve into them. Also this movie is like chapter 50/551 so them trying to make a 5-movie franchise was already a red flag from the start
I haven't watched it yet but what I've picked up is that people are upset that they didn't stick to the original…
it's so funny when people assume that fans are just talking about the webtoon when it comes to the visual of the characters. not knowing that the novel itself has VISUAL ILLUSTRATIONS of the characters which the webtoon are based on. Since your such a literary genius, what is the "essence" of ORV that the film has properly adapted?? I don't really cared about how the actors resembles the characters. I think a lot of people were just mad on the chabges they made since it either made a lot of future major plot point irrelevant or impossible to adapt with current circumstances. At that point ur just borrowing the orv name and you can't expect people who liked the source to still support something that is essentially just ORV in name. Even if what u say is true that fans of the original just likes to complain, then this would have been popular to those who haven't read the novel but that didn't happen, I would argue that majority of the people who watched this movie are non-fans yet it still failed to promote through word-of-mouth. You can also take into account that when this film has been released, the gov gave everybody coupons that was essentially a 40% discount on any movie they want to watch and people still chose to watch a 2 month old F1 movie instead. It failed as a movie, thats a fact. It didn't appeal to fans yet also failed to appeal to non-fans that it was basically out of theaters 2 weeks after release. This whole "fans not understanding the essence" is just moot when you realize that over 50% of movie watcher of this movie are non-fans . Are you insinuating that those non-fans also failed to comprehend he essence of a novel that they haven't read yet since they didn't spread the word that it was good?
I think people who hated this, hated the change from the novel butttt this was really good overally. Korea has…
korea have been adapting novels since forever. This movie just proved that to be successful, you can't just throw money and expensive cast into it. This would have been much better as a drama rather than a movie. This movie lost so much that investors might be wary when it comes to investing and making hard to pitch another novel adaptation movie in the future
Even though I have not seen the movie, the fans of Omniscient Reader and their enthusiasm towards the main thing…
Biggest reason is because the actress they casted didn't have any time to film or train sword choreo. It's awfully obvious once you notice that all her scene except for one is a solo scene, either sitting somewhere sniping alone or her being imposed into scenes to make it seems she's interacting with the rest lf the cast. She only ever was in the same scene with a single main cast member
Another good reminder of why I shouldn't follow the ratings.Pls the novel fans should keep reading novels and…
"Pls the novel fans should keep reading novels and stay away from the live action, thanks." Well lucky you, they actually stayed away from watching this movie, which made this movie fails, since novel readers were their main target. The popularity of the novel is what green lit this movie and what made investors invest so much money.
Review bombing mdl, imdb, rotten tomatoes or any other rating sites doesnt really matter. The main demographic…
Thats why I prefaced thats it's MAIN demographic is korea and review bombs from internation fans didnt really have as much impact as people think they have. I also would like to clarify that the korean forums when the movie was announced were mostly positive, it wasnt mixed like international audience reactions, the negative reaction from knetz only started when the first trailer dropped and articles of the changes were in droves
Review bombing mdl, imdb, rotten tomatoes or any other rating sites doesnt really matter. The main demographic…
uhm I literally had a korean friend check the search result when the movie was announced in korea and it was the number 1 and trending for a week with a bunch of articles in Naver, Yes, ORV is popular globally, but international audience only account for AT MOST 30% of the fanbase of ORV. International audience's reaction which ur most likely referencing is not what i am talking about. Most koreans were hopeful when this movie was announced especially with the casting
novel fans really bombed the rating am crying 😭 overall the movie wasn’t bad the only notable thing is the…
Review bombing mdl, imdb, rotten tomatoes or any other rating sites doesnt really matter. The main demographic for this movie is korea, and they rarely use these sites since they have their own. Knetz already had a bad impression of the movie even before release which is obvious when you take into account that they only got 120k views in its opening when usually this high-budget/hyped up movie average around 400k-600k opening. (Case in point; zombie daughter and kimetsu no yaiba). I undestand ur sentiment that its a decent movie, not the best but also not the worst, but you gotta understand the hype it got and also due fact that its a movie that was announced years ago with the casting it had. Everybody expected this to be the next big franchise in korea only for them to be met with disappointment when the trailer dropped.
If i would compare this to a western release, this would be equivalent to the DCEU's Justicd League movie. Star casting, high budget, hype sorrounding it to finally have something to compete with MCU and expected to be a long-running franchise just to be met with a lot of production issues that ultimately led to its box office flop even for the average viewer. Obviously the scale is different but hopefully u get my point
I haven't read the novel and I thought it was really fun. Hardly a masterpiece but a common summer popcorn flick…
I think that premise poses problems: 1 - There's is no chance that pildu is the richest there when yoo joonghyuk exist. Pidlu is implied to have mostly just stayed on his green zone where he collected coins from people who wanted to get into his zone during the scenario. Even without joonhyuk, somebody from dokja crew should be the richest considering they protected him while he was in the mental prison basically from night to morning and considering each kill gives like 300 coins and we saw hundred spawn within just a minute. Imagine how much they killed for hours
2 - Why would Bihyeong give dokja the donation when their whole alliance is rooted on the fact that dokja convinced Bihyeong using the donation he would get that he can use as a way to get promotion.
The sad thing for us novel and manhwa readers is that they rushed through everything and didn't include a lot…
Every character is essentially unrecognizable if you compare them to their novel counterparts. I am not talking about superficial changer like their appearance or weapons they use but their characterizations (personality, motivation, morality, etc) are completely different.
Oh, I thought this was going to be a series, don't think they could fit too much in a movie.
it was planned to be a 5 movie series. This movie covered about 40 chapter of webtoon or 50 chapters of the novel. I don't think there's gonna be another movie considering how much they loss
I haven't read the novel and I thought it was really fun. Hardly a masterpiece but a common summer popcorn flick…
Look guys, somebody pointing out a fact, they MUST be mentally ill. Is that the new type of insult here? Come on bruh at least come up with something creative. [Instead of defending my point, let's go straight to insults.] Lol
(i don't really care who they cast tbh)

1 - There's is no chance that pildu is the richest there when yoo joonghyuk exist.
