12 episodes of absolute peak K-drama chaos… and then the writers fumbled ?

I was skeptical when I started watching Dynamite Kiss, because the reviews were kinda low, But the drama was giving exactly what it was supposed to give. For the first 12 episodes, it was a 10/10. It had the perfect traditional K-drama formula: insane class divide, completely unhinged over-the-top comedy, and a totally ridiculous fake-husband love square. It was peak chaotic entertainment and had me laughing out loud constantly.

But then the last two episodes happened, and the writing absolutely gave out.

Why I still loved it (The Highlights)

For me, Ahn Eun-jin as Go Da-rim was the absolute star of this show. Her acting was incredible and she completely outshone Jang Ki-yong. Her facial expressions were so nuanced when she was trying to communicate specific emotions, I almost cried a few times. She understood the assignment perfectly.

The Jeju Island era was unmatched. The immediate chemistry between Go Da-rim and Gong Ji-hyeok in the first two episodes set the bar way too high. Those early intimate scenes gave major romance wow moments.

The parts that lowered my score (The Missed Opportunities)

They robbed us of actual spice in romance once it developed properly. After that high bar in Jeju, the physical progression of their relationship just vanished. Instead of proper reconciliation of their relationship, they never got to do at Jeju once they actually got together, all we got was the two of them hiding under a blanket. Please. 🙄

Go Da-rim became an accessory at the end. That sudden breakup and separation was so unnecessary. Even though it lasted all of two minutes on screen, the writers basically benched Go Da-rim and made her useless at the end while Gong Ji-hyeok handled all the drama alone. They should have been a team! Because of that, the final showdown felt so incomplete and messy.

Kim Mu-jun was wasted. He had such an amazing screen presence and was absolutely romantical role material. The second couple plot needed to kick off way earlier. Kim Mu-jun spent like 3/4 of the show just pining after Go Da-rim, which severely dragged his own arc down. Choosing not to develop his romance with the second female lead earlier was such a missed opportunity.

Final Verdict

Even though the writers wobbled horribly at the finish line, the drama still served a highly satisfactory happy ending. It honestly deserves a bit higher score than the average rating it's getting right now because those first 12 episodes were a total ride and much better than some of the Netflix K-dramas that are coming out right now. Several I started are just plain unwatchable from the get-go. Definitely go watch Dynamite Kiss! It’s one of the better Netflix rom com K-drama productions in the recent years.
