I can understand your feelings. But I've moved past that; I've decided to interpret it differently: her character is supposed to have withdrawn into herself because of her past and her losses, so expressing her pain and grief must be done with restraint, almost against her will. That's my humble opinion and interpretation.

I think she didn't say she was too old, she said :"I'm older than you" , therefore that's why she was using the "familiar you" and not the "polite you".
