hey so i think i can help with this confusion of yours, so basically, to sum it all up— its not entirely bc of the netizens, well, it is. but it was generally because of an association called "china association of performing arts" known as CAPA.
okay before that, i'll apologize for my not so fluent english, but basically, theyre the ones causing the not so big flame turn into a whole forest flame. they were the first to propose a boycott towards zhang zhehan, with the reasoning of him being "pro-japanese" which is NOT true. "why was this case so prolonged?" well, this case (more known as 813, which i will refer to from now on) is not based on solely the boycott and the yasukuni shrine. but rather, because of manipulation of the public view by some quite influential people. i cant quite say who, but one of them i believe was someone who had worked alongside with zhang zhehan (IT IS NOT GONGJUN.), a staff, or smth..
