I do have some questions, though, RE: Peem / being a shaman.1) So while he was a full-fledged shaman, he was supposed…
Ok so just thinking re: the noble precepts in Buddhism… one of the five is refraining from illicit sexual conduct. I suspect as a shaman he’d made a vow to remain celibate (possibly due to believing he was asexual, since he didn’t seem to be attracted to anyone in his life up to that point). When he met Khem, his feelings betrayed him. In the first NC scene, it was Khem that didn’t want to consummate their physical relationship, perhaps because he sensed Peem’s conflicting feelings. Losing his powers meant he was no longer bound to that vow, and he felt free to act on his desires, as they were not illicit - he loves Khem. So he is not in violation of the precepts (which he’s bound to whether he’s a shaman or not) or his vow. As for his future as a shaman, Grandma reminded him he does not NEED to be celibate, so I’m assuming when he regains his power, he will not consider himself bound to his vow anymore, as he’s sort of starting fresh. Let’s face it, this dude is NOT going to remain chaste with his husband his whole life. Just speculation but this is how I’m head canoning this.
Also (off topic) someone was complaining about them using female pronouns for Khem at the end (mother/wife). I agree that in most BL’s this is problematic and indicative of a societal need to assign gender roles in same sex couples. In this, though, Khem has been very gender-fluid on purpose through the whole series, because this expression is another way he carries his past karma. I actually appreciate it.
