I really appreciate your perspective—it almost led me to view the show in a different light. While I don't have…
Why did she go back to that specific time 20+ times? After trying 5 or 10 times, why not change course and go back a day or two earlier? Was that loop her only option? If the drama explained a rule about why she couldn't go back further and I missed it, point it out. But don't assume I skipped scenes just because I’m questioning the logic.

Is the story really that unique? Strip away the multiple leads, and it’s the same as any other drama in this genre: good guys and demons fighting an ancient evil. I never thought WSG was the sole main character; from the start, I knew all four leads plus butterfly guy had big roles. But later on, it just felt like Ji Ling and Lu Wuyi's world, and everyone else was just there to witness their love story. Chi Wen’s sacrifice felt genuinely lonely and tragic, but Ji Ling's tragedy just felt forced for the sake of being tragic.

I could argue more about what felt off, and you could counter it, but I don't want to be labeled a hater or ignorant. I’ve enjoyed the discussion, but I’m done arguing about this drama.

You make some compelling points, and I appreciate your perspective! However, I still have some lingering confusion regarding the dragon mechanics.

From my understanding, the nine dragons consolidated their power to give birth to the tenth dragon. By that logic, shouldn't Wu Shiguan possess some level of innate power? I have to disagree with the idea that the Dragon God wasn't nerfed. If the drama hadn't spent the first half portraying him as highly intelligent, capable in martial arts, and able to stand his ground against powerful nine-tailed foxes using his beads, his sudden incompetence might be believable. But he was shown as someone who could beat the odds with great fighting skills. Why did that prowess completely vanish once he became a dragon?

I have no issue with him getting assistance, but he seemed to survive only because of others, with no real agency of his own. Compared to Chi Wen and Ji Ling, who constantly made strategic plans and held their own, Wu Shiguan felt less like a respected deity and more like a glorified vessel just holding power. The drama established the Dragon God as a tangible force capable of changing destinies and saving lives, not just a passive symbol of faith.

Ultimately, we can agree to disagree. This is still a decent drama with many amazing aspects, even if the plot faltered for me. While the majority might find the script alone compelling enough to watch, I think I’m just in the minority who couldn't have sat through it without the breathtaking visuals and showmanship.

Saying Veil of Shadows has “no plot” feels less like criticism of the story itself and more like impatience…
I really appreciate your perspective—it almost led me to view the show in a different light. While I don't have the deep knowledge of Chinese folklore to argue its "mythological influence," as a C-drama fan, I never expected a standard Western structure anyway. I just wanted a fantasy with complex characters and a challenging plot. The show started out that way, but it ultimately dropped the ball.

When I say "I gave up understanding the plot," I’m not talking about the underlying story, which is naturally intriguing. I mean the actual execution after the first arc. Can this plot actually hold our attention without its mesmerizing cast, stunning costumes, and out-of-this-world cinematography? After a certain point, I don't think it can.

While a narrative doesn't need to be linear, it does need to be consistent. This show constantly contradicts its own rules:

The Dragon Lord Nerf: From episode one, the plot emphasizes the immense might of the almighty Dragon Lord. Yet Wu Shiguan is left on the sidelines, constantly needing a whole team of demon hunters just to keep evil at bay or needing to be saved himself.

The Flawed Time Loop: When Lu Wuyi gets the power to rewind time to save Ji Ling, she attempts it over twenty times. But why keep going back to the exact same checkpoint? If it isn't working, why not go back earlier to fix the root of the problem? It just felt incredibly repetitive.

The side characters were genuinely good, but the plot kept us trapped watching Lu Wuyi and Ji Ling go through the exact same emotional cycles in different fonts. Dynamic characters like Han Ban, Bai Ze, and the other demon hunters deserved far more screen time. I also loved Xiaomei’s gender fluidity, but I wished her female form was showcased in the powerful action scenes, especially since she was one of the few foxes who resisted manipulation.

Finally, death lacks any real tragic weight because characters are revived a minute later. The final showdown was honestly embarrassing to watch. Why drag Ji Ling back from the brink of death just to defeat an antagonist who didn't even feel smart or unbeatable? By that point, I was almost rooting for the Jiuing demon to win.

Ultimately, the director did an amazing job with the aesthetic elements, the brilliant cast, and the incredible OST—the plot is the only thing he fumbled. I was still able to finish it, but that is purely thanks to its spectacular showmanship, not its script.

Not all chemistry is about sizzling if you haven't found emotional depth in ji ling and wuyi story then for you…
I hope so too.

For me, wuwu pair never felt like enemies. They were more like people with different personalities who mutually understood and communicated with each other most of the time. I also initially liked the jilu pair. Like you said, it was refreshing. Also I never said they lacked chemistry. Contrary to what you said with all the over romantic scenes they had it is very hard to not have chemistry. Those handwashing scenes were the only time I could feel their relationship. It just got very tiring for me with the crying every second, dying every other minute. You can have your favorite. And I can have mine. No need to argue who is better than the other.

I was only able to finish this drama because of all the hot people. Halfway through it I gave up understanding the plot. I realised there is no STORY LINE. Its just hot people declaring their love for one another, despite the looming crisis.
I started this drama becoz of TJR, I fell in love with his acting in MJTY. But I couldn’t get past episode 6. Eventually I picked it up again and I ended up liking JZ and CDL more. I felt their chemistry more natural and sizzling.
Infact watching ji ling and wuyi gave me a constant headache with their crying and dying. I agree visually their scenes were good, stunning even but emotionally it lacked depth. It felt like they were going through the motions to achieve what is conventionally accepted as epic love.
And the biggest joke of all is the Dragon Deity Master. Wu shuguan was much more interesting and powerful as a bead wielding demon hunter than as a 10 th dragon. Never have I seen Dragons being so useless and powerless in a drama that even a weasel could outshine it. And even ji ling became more powerful the moment he shed his chi wen role.
I couldn’t care less about who or what li jie or yuan wuhuo is. As long as it was yanyan delivers the dialogue and flexes his arms I am happy enough to watch it.

Also for some reason all the female characters except one are either manipulated, used or shown evil.
I will end my long rant with this.. I like the costumes , OST and the characters to some extent. But I refuse to believe this is a good drama with a solid plot.
