I love you IU, but this genuinely has to be the worst thing of yours I’ve watched.

I just finished watching one of the most beautiful c-dramas about young adults figuring life out, finding love, making mistakes, and learning how to move forward, so imagine how bad this had to feel for me to switch to this immediately after. IU’s characterization here feels like a mix of her real-life idol persona and a watered-down version of Jang Man Wol from HDL, and it just does not come together well.

The Queen Mother is hateful for no clearly established reason, and worse, she is not even tactical about it. Prince Ian supposedly had a crush on IU’s character, yet rejected her several times and even pretended not to know who she was at the beginning. The drama introduces a monarchy and governing system, but never properly establishes how that world actually functions. Every major conflict somehow comes down to someone starting a fire. IU’s character supposedly wants status, even though she lacked nothing except her father’s affection, which honestly was not enough to justify the obsession with power and status they tried to portray, as she was successful regardless of her status as commoner, perhaps it’s on the writer for not adequately showing us how she lacked.

Then they sprinkle in a few falling-and-catching moments, prolonged staring scenes, and suddenly we are supposed to believe they are deeply in love. Prince Ian wants to abolish the monarchy, yet there is no properly developed reason behind that goal because the monarchy versus modern government dynamic is barely explored in the first place. And if he truly wanted to abolish the monarchy, why would he intentionally marry someone obsessed with status and royal positioning?

The characters are painfully inconsistent. One moment Ian can stand up to the Queen Mother with authority, the next moment he suddenly becomes completely submissive and powerless around her depending on what the scene needs. Nothing feels earned emotionally or politically because the writing keeps bending characters to force drama instead of building believable motivations.

It honestly feels like the production team relied heavily on the star power of IU and Byeon Woo Seok instead of putting real effort into developing the characters and worldbuilding. And before people misunderstand me, I’m saying this as a genuine fan. For three years straight IU topped my Spotify Wrapped, and during Spotify’s 20-year celebration she was revealed as my most streamed artist of all time since 2020. So this is absolutely not coming from a place of hate. I just know she is capable of far better script choices than this.

With the amount of controversy already surrounding this drama, I honestly hope she is more careful with script selection moving forward because this whole thing felt extremely juvenile. A drama can still be light, cute, and have happy endings without the plot feeling this shallow and underdeveloped. We are in 2026 for goodness’ sake.

I love this drama so much; I always cry at the end. It feels so realistic, just like everyday life over the course of a few years. I love Shen Si Yi and Lu Ke so much. I usually never rewatch dramas, but here I am, watching this one again. I hope there are more dramas like this.

Dropped at ep 7. I really tried to get into it for wang churan, but I am not a fan of transmigration or alternate worlds, so I just found myself miserable watching this and had to drop it. I will be looking forward to her other projects but this is not it for me unfortunately.

I don’t agree. I think you’re forgetting TaeSeo’s own struggles, he had lost both his parents in an accident…
I don’t agree at all. I think you’re missing what Eunha was actually dealing with. TaeSeo’s struggle was about independence. He had a home, he had something to fall back on. Eunha didn’t have that. She wasn’t just sad or confused, her entire life collapsed. A suicidal parent, then losing him, and being on the edge of homelessness is not something you just “push through” for love.

If it wasn’t for her stepmother, someone she didn’t even like, she would have had absolutely nothing. She even tried to stay in Seoul after getting the guesthouse back, but she lost her job too. At that point, what exactly was she supposed to do? Stay in Seoul with no money, no stability, and depend on TaeSeo while he was already struggling? That’s not love, that’s just setting herself up to suffer even more. Going back to somewhere stable was the only sensible choice she had.

I also think the way the story was shown made it easier for people to side with TaeSeo. We constantly see him working, being tired, doing something physical, so it automatically makes people feel for him. EunA’s struggles were not shown in the same way. Her battles were more internal and situational, dealing with grief, mental stress, and literally trying to stay afloat. Because we don’t “see” her working in that same visible way, it’s easy to assume she’s just running away or not trying hard enough, which is not true.

The writing didn’t balance their struggles well. TaeSeo’s problems are straightforward and easy to understand, job, money, family. EunA’s situation is messier, but just as serious. The show didn’t give enough attention to what she was actually going through, so it ends up looking like she is the difficult one, when in reality she was just trying to survive.

And about the second breakup, that was clearly a misunderstanding. She tried to explain herself multiple times and was never given the chance. When she finally went to see him, she met another girl there. What was she supposed to do in that situation? Force her way in? It just wasn’t handled properly.

Calling her selfish ignores everything she went through. She wasn’t choosing herself over him for fun, she was trying to hold herself together when everything around her had already fallen apart.

This started as a compelling story, portraying how timing and distance can affect relationships. It highlights that love alone is not enough when faced with various personal challenges. However, the writing fell short. The biggest flaw was its bias toward the male lead, focusing excessively on his grief and struggles while downplaying the female lead's issues, which were much deeper. She was dealing with significant challenges in her life and mental health. No one whose father committed suicide and is on the brink of losing everything they have built would be completely fine. Yet, she is criticized for not focusing on her boyfriend, whose grandmother is sick. I don’t understand the purpose of the other female character; she seems inconsequential and irrelevant to their story. They had opportunities to say goodbye but failed to discuss their relationship in depth. It shouldn’t be that difficult. They made themselves more depressed than necessary. I enjoy dramas like this, but this one was not executed well. I hope people come to understand the female character better instead of blaming her. She went through a lot, from caring for a suicidal father to dealing with her mother’s abandonment, her grievances with her stepmother, and facing the threat of homelessness and unemployment. Everyone overlooked her struggles. Of course, she doesn’t want to burden Taeseo, but she is labeled the runaway girlfriend. I wish they had done her character more justice, but this is all we get. I hope the next drama I watch is better executed.

The plot is very well thought out, 7 cases plus overarching main case. But you can't seriously expect the plot…
Wrong. I read high fantasy books with over 1,000 pages, where the stories begin on the first page and span ten books in a series, like Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive. I also enjoy mystery books that start strong from the first book. However, the writing here just doesn't engage me. The approach feels boring. Just because someone doesn't like what you enjoyed doesn't mean they have a low attention span. There can be side plots that allude to the main plot, but this is filled with filler content. The stakes of the overarching revenge plot are neither visually nor emotionally reinforced. We lack an emotional connection to the villains being brought to justice, making their deaths or escapes feel meaningless. This is simply poor writing. For the main story to begin in episode 22 is ridiculous. I have watched several other dramas with side plots that still give you something to look forward to. Their side stories are tied to the main plot, and the villains are well-developed enough that you want to see them defeated. This is just not a good story, full stop.

Dropped at episode 10. I enjoy the investigations, but there is no focused plot. I need them to show me, not tell me, what I should be looking forward to. While I understand we are anticipating her revenge for her parents’ death, they keep telling instead of showing. The lack of engagement makes it difficult for me to sit through 34 episodes. I love strong female characters; in fact, I tend to gravitate toward them. However, I just don’t care about these characters enough to feel anger toward them as she clocks them, making it boring to watch. I need to feel some connection, whether positive or negative, to enjoy a character, but right now, everything feels flat. It’s a pity because I enjoy watching strong female characters, and I love Bai Lu in this role, but I don’t like how the plot is unfolding. I am so bored.

Taiga tried, but he was lukewarm. You can tell that is just how he is, but from a girlfriend’s perspective, it can easily come across as a lack of interest. He is a bit too lax about things. On the other hand, Rin is not patient at all. I feel she would have been more suited with the sunbae. She needs someone more mature who can handle her personality and take her antics. Taiga is not like that, so they don’t match. They will keep clashing because their views on a lot of things are completely different. They both still have a lot of growing up to do. So despite the initial attraction, they are a mismatch and not compatible. Even though they resolved some of their issues, that still stands.

I don’t even want to talk about the other couple. I don’t understand what that girl is doing with that lowlife. A complete waste of space. I won’t even waste my breath on him.

But that is just how life is. Some people come into your life so you can learn a lesson at that point in time. It can only go two ways, it either works or it doesn’t.

It is a very evenly paced series and quite chill. It gives the vibe of an ordinary life, which a lot of us live. There is no unnecessary drama, and I really enjoyed that. The cinematography was top notch as well.

Actually, emphasising it over and over again made it look very weak and forced - it has a much higher impact when…
It was not talked about but there was representation. The female genral herself, the queen, her motivating other women. I don’t understand how emphasizing that made ir weak or forced but if that’s is your opinion, you are entitled to it

I have been watching a lot of dramas that were okay at best. This was genuinely good. I loved everything about it and I love the women empowerment theme in such an era. It was beautiful to see that emphasized several times. I enjoyed this so much.

How you are calling this a movie ??
Series, movie, drama, show, whatever. You understand what I’m referring to, and I can tell you’re not confused. It’s not a big deal to call it out. I’ll edit it anyway, but honestly, this isn’t a formal setting, so it really doesn’t matter.

Just inventing random sht. Him being in an accident to save her is way more believable than the random illness

On Can This Love Be Translated? Feb 3, 2026
This show tried so hard to paint this deep, emotional picture but just veered completely off road. All those twists and turns were straight-up unnecessary, they just cluttered everything. The pacing is weird as hell: somehow rushed and painfully slow at the same time. I get that they were going for “dealing with trauma,” but the split-personality stuff fell completely flat and didn’t land at all for me. The translator app magically appears only when it’s convenient for the plot, but when the Japanese guy is actually speaking Japanese? Crickets. Then out of nowhere he’s suddenly fluent in Korean. How convenient. The whole parents’ backstory drama felt tacked on and pointless too. That said, the aesthetics? They absolutely nailed those. Visually stunning from start to finish.
