Exaaaaactly, you said it all. It’s not just that it came out of nowhere, it’s the fact that it doesn’t add up with everything she’s been doing up until now.
Did they really need to do that at the end of episode 11? 😭
I’m honestly so disappointed because this series had so much potential. Yes, nothing about it was particularly new it was a pretty typical rom-com but the beginning was SO well done that even the cliché parts never felt cliché. Everything felt intentional, well-written, and tightly connected.
But somewhere around the end of episode 9, then episodes 10 and 11, I started feeling like the writers started going completely off the rails 😭
First, the fight between Hagi and Dareum felt completely forced. I genuinely didn’t feel like there was a strong enough reason for them to have that conflict. And then, right after that, we suddenly get Dareum wanting to go to Paris. And to be clear, I have absolutely no problem with Dareum wanting to go to Paris or having another ambition. The problem is how out of nowhere it feels.
Like someone else mentioned in the comments, she’s a rookie. She literally just started working at the company, and her whole goal was to prove herself, she told her mom how happy she was at Appello, she even refused Chan's offer to LA because her dream job was at Appelo.. And now, suddenly, she’s this incredibly talented member who apparently needs to go abroad, where to PARIS? The ex is a fashion designer so Paris made sens for her but Dareum is a marketer so why ?
Even the way the Paris storyline was introduced felt so artificial. She sees a magazine, reads a quote, suddenly becomes a fan of this woman, and now she wants to go to Paris. 😭 It doesn't feel like something that was naturally built into her character. It feels like a plot device created specifically to put another obstacle between her and Hagi.
And THAT is what frustrates me the most.
Because after Hagi and Dareum finally got together, we barely even got to see them as a couple. It feels like the writers completely changed priorities. They spent all this time building their relationship, only for them to get together and immediately become secondary to a series of obstacles designed to separate them.
Every episode since they got together feels like: Okay, how can we separate them again? 😭
And the same thing applies to the other plots.
Hagi and Chan's reconciliation felt incredibly flat and rushed. And then DNX suddenly reconciling and wanting to get back together also came out of nowhere. I actually think the idea could have worked, but it was introduced way too late.
I've seen several people say that all of this happened because the drama only had 12 episodes and the writers had to wrap everything up quickly. I don't really think that. 12 episodes can absolutely be enough if you use them well. The problem is that some of the plots introduced toward the end weren't even necessary in the first place. For example, the whole DNX comeback/reconciliation could have been introduced much earlier and developed gradually. Then it would've felt natural. Instead, it appears so late that the resolution feels like: Okay, we need to fix this before the finale, so let's just make everyone talk and suddenly everything is fine.
I actually would've preferred Chan to have a proper conversation with the members and with Hagi to finally express all the feelings that had been left unspoken. It didn't need to be all pink and rainbows immediately afterward. Let them have an honest, messy conversation. Let there be some unresolved feelings. That would've felt much more real.
And that's why I'm so sad about this. It's not that the story was inherently bad. The beginning showed that the writers were capable of doing so much better.
I had the exact same feeling earlier this year with IDOL I. Both series had SO much potential, and in both cases, it feels like everything starts falling apart once the leads finally get together and there are only a few episodes left.
It's becoming a pattern that genuinely frustrates me: the writers spend most of the drama making us root for the couple, finally put them together, and then barely let us enjoy them before throwing every possible obstacle at them
I really wish this series had trusted the story and characters it had already built instead of adding unnecessary drama at the very end.
