I totally get people still being a little bias against him. They did well to set him up as a bad guy and I feel a lot of people went into this episode with that narrative in their minds, expecting to see it play out and so that's all they saw. It is a good human experiment in some ways that if people get told someone is wrong collectively, then no matter what they see that narrative will still be influencing them. The Zhou family did well in that respect.
I feel Shen Mo won't be so easily convinced. Off to discover the secrets of the mountain villa he goes. Good boy
It's ok, the more this story plays out we will see that shift. I just hope no one dismisses this BL because of that. It really is brilliant.
Mr. Ji was actually didn't act to sell Shen Mo out. He didn't do what everyone, including himself said he did. Here is how I watched it play out:
In Episode 5, he tells Shen Mo that he sold him out to the Zhou family simply to push him away. He even looks shocked when Shen Mo returns to give his sister recovery gifts. Realizing this lie hasn’t worked to create distance, he breaks the contract entirely just to send Shen Mo away for his own good.
In Episode 6, we see the real backstory: Mr. Ji falling for a bright, happy Shen Mo from afar, but keeping his distance. He initially looks into Zhou Yang only because his sister has feelings for him. He is clearly disappointed when he discovers that Zhou Yang and Shen Mo are already together, but he steps back. His priority shifts to protecting his sister. Knowing her crush will go nowhere, and that her weak heart could never handle the heartbreak, he approaches the Zhou family with one clear intention: stopping his sister from going abroad with Zhou Yang. He tells them he cannot let her go because their son already has a lover. Crucially, he never names Shen Mo. He simply states that Zhou Yang is seeing someone and leaves it at that, expecting a clean, quiet break between the families. He never intended for them to uncover Shen Mo's identity.
Mr. Ji is completely blindsided when his sister later comes home and announces that Zhou Yang is going abroad with her after all. That was never part of the deal. Realizing the Zhou family must have forced a breakup behind the scenes, he confirms it through his informant. With the trip officially back on and no obvious reason left to stop her, he reluctantly lets his sister go.
However, knowing how ruthless the Zhou family can be, Mr. Ji grows terrified that they did their own digging and targeted Shen Mo. He immediately orders his men to tail Shen Mo for his protection. Even so, Shen Mo is abducted, and Mr. Ji only arrives just in time to rescue him after a brutal beating.
When you lay it all out, Mr. Ji is largely innocent. He respected Zhou Yang and Shen Mo’s relationship and stayed out of it. His only goal was shielding his sister from falling harder for a man who could never love her. He never could have predicted that the Zhou family would go to such violent extremes just to keep the overseas arrangement intact.
Watch the confrontation with the Zhou family again: Mr. Ji never reveals who Zhou Yang is seeing, nor does he demand they split up. He merely removes his sister from the equation like any protective brother would. The Zhou family is the real danger here; Mr. Ji was simply scrambling to clean up the fallout once he realized what they had done.
The weight of guilt he carries makes complete sense. In his mind, his attempt to protect his sister inadvertently put a target on Shen Mo’s back. Everything he has done since, distancing himself, playing the villain, and breaking contracts has been a desperate attempt to hide and protect the person he hurt by accident.
