I honestly don't get why they wrote it this way. It doesn't do the story any favors and is completely illogical. Having him die in an accident would have made far more sense. In reality, medical personnel wouldn't go into high-risk areas. And even if it wasn't a risky area, he was a big, tall guy—he shouldn't have been overpowered like that. If it was just a robbery, it makes even less sense because he would have just handed his things over anyway; there was no need to kill him.
