it is late yes, but i think she has been regretting some of her choices ever since the war started. i think thats what truly opened her eyes to both her own feelings and also to an extent, the situation zhao ling got pushed into. but now there isnt much to do. she just wants to do something and help him because she can see the parallels and reversals and its hurting her. she's too worried to play it cool now at least in private when they are by themselves.
