Contains Spoilers A flawless and breathtaking masterpiece.
What an absolute masterpiece! Against the Current delivered everything and more across its 47 flawlessly told episodes. This is the kind of story where absolutely nothing is meaningless. Every plot point, the deep context, and even the literal meaning of the characters' names had a specific purpose. Everything connected with a level of perfection that is rare to find in C-dramas nowadays.
The production value was outstanding, but I must praise the cast: even the villains completely stole the show! They delivered such powerful performances that heightened the political and family tension to the maximum. To make the immersion even better, the OST is incredibly beautiful and moving, playing at just the right moments to break our hearts. However, a fair warning: I highly recommend this drama, but only if you have a strong heart. If you are planning to watch it, prepare your tissues because you will cry a river!
The bottom line is that the story was beautiful. So why did I give it a 9.5 instead of a 10? The reason has a name. I had so much hope that the male lead would finally live a calm, peaceful, and long life alongside his family. My heart was breaking for Han Liang to survive all that injustice, and it truly hurts to accept Jinqi's ultimate fate after everything they went through. Still, it was worth every single second and every episode.
A personal note to the screenwriters and directors: In the next drama this actor( Liu Xue Yi )stars in, please DO NOT KILL HIM! Leave him alive and give him a very happy, peaceful ending, because my drama-watching heart cannot take this kind of heartbreak anymore! 😭💔
