Watching Shadow Punisher made me realize something about Fang Yilun as an actor. I know romance dramas are hugely popular, and Fang is obviously handsome enough to be a romantic male lead. I’ve enjoyed him in romantic roles too. But personally, I think there is something he does even better. Fang Yilun is incredible when he has another strong male actor — or a whole group — to really play with. I don’t mean romantic or BL chemistry. I mean that strong, natural male chemistry built on friendship, rivalry, trust, loyalty, teasing, conflict and brotherhood. He seems to come alive in those relationships because he really reacts to the actors around him. I could see it with the group in A Journey to Love, with Gong Jun, with Yang Yang, with Prince Hengyang in Les Belles, and now especially with Luo Yunxi in Shadow Punisher. They are all very different dynamics, but Fang has this ability to make those relationships feel real. He listens, reacts, gives something back to his partner, and somehow the other actor becomes more interesting too. The scenes between Meng Rui and Li Si in Shadow Punisher made me think how much I would love to see Fang in a really strong wuxia, mystery or political intrigue with several equally strong male characters. Not necessarily another romance as the centre of the story, but a drama about friendship, loyalty, secrets, conflict and people who slowly learn to trust each other. Give him a great story, a sword, a mystery and actors like Luo Yunxi, Cheng Yi, Cheng Lei, Wang Xingyue, Gong Jun to play against — I would watch that drama immediately. Fang Yilun is a very handsome man, of course. But for me, his greatest screen appeal isn’t simply how he looks. It’s what happens to him when another good actor gives him something to react to. That’s when he becomes impossible not to watch.
