Review: Mr. Fanboy (Episodes 1–8)

A Thai BL series produced by Mandee Work, adapted from the novel by littlebear96

At first glance, Mr. Fanboy feels like a light, fun showbiz romance about a star-struck fan stepping into the world he has only admired from afar. After watching the first eight episodes, however, this drama turns out to be far more layered: it explores fandom, the dark side of the entertainment industry, and a slow-burn love story that completely subverts Wan’s original expectations.

Wan, our lead character, is a loyal fan of celebrity Nine. When he sneaks backstage, he is immediately mistaken for a sasaeng fan by Third, Nine’s on-screen partner. This hostile first meeting sets up their tense dynamic. By a twist of fate, Wan gets an audition chance and is cast in the same BL drama as his idol. What begins as his dream come true slowly crumbles. The glamorous celebrity world he once idealized hides jealousy, manipulation and behind-the-scenes scheming.

The most attractive arc is the relationship between Wan and Third. They start off bickering and distrusting each other. As Wan suffers repeated trouble and sabotage, Third repeatedly stands up for him. Wan gradually realises that the person he once disliked is the one who truly cares for him, while his long-time idol Nine reveals a selfish, manipulative side. The chemistry between the two leads builds naturally, and their getaway trip in Episode 8 marks a sweet turning point for their bond.

This series also thoughtfully comments on modern fan culture. It discusses the boundary between sincere admiration and obsessive stalking. The script balances comedy, romantic tension and suspense well. The supporting characters Renji and Time add warm, lively moments to ease the heavy conflicts on set.

There are still four episodes left, and the conflict with Nine remains unresolved. Up to now, Mr. Fanboy has successfully hooked audiences. It is not merely a typical BL romance; it tells a story about growing up, letting go of false illusions, and falling for the person you never expected.
