As long as the stab is not in the abdominal aorta, a person can survive for hours and even days with such a wound without extracting the cause of stab "the branch". Removing it leads to immediate death by hypovolemic shock "sudden drop in blood volume" and that's exactly what Top did when he took off the branch. Without doing that and keeping pressing the wound area and trying to keep it away from infection as possible, maybe he could've lasted longer.

I genuinely don't know but it would make more sense if there was some kind of classification for their powers like this section has super senses, that section has hypnotizing and so on, then there should be people other than Charlie who had the same power as him and they returned to their owners when the absorbers died so he would know by others' experiences.
