Hihi not sure if it will help but, from the drama (Ep 13-14) sorry didn't read the novel yet,
basically the Heavenly Emperor[when he was still a prince] fell in love with Flower Deity (Jinmi's mother) when he saw her, so he tried all ways to court her and they were in a relationship. However because he wanted to become the emperor he had to marry the current empress (since marriage with the bird tribe will help him? Like the same reason why the empress keeps pressuring Xu Feng to marry Sui He). So the Flower deity was heartbroken since he chose power over her. Then she fell in love with the water god and had a relationship(and became pregnant w Jin Mi but she didn't know) . But obviOUSly the emperor ain't easily stepping down so he kept harassing her and raped her when she was reluctant! After that, the Flower Deity was ashamed (for "betraying" Water God) and tried to drink water from the Lethe River (river of unmindfulness) so she can forget everything. But the Heavenly Emperor stops her and brought her back to the Heaven Realm and purposely made her listen to him 'encouraging' the Water God and Wind Deity to get married. But, the Water God was like nOPE I already like Flower Deity so he left and she followed. But because she was still recuperating from (attempt of suicide at the River), she was slow and got caught by the Empress, who then tried to kill her (by pushing her into a corner, blocking the entrance with some blue fire thingy) so her only way out was to jump off the terrace (which she did and injured her severely). Then, since she know she is gonna die soon (because of her injuries), she told Water God that she have no feelings for him at all and told him to marry Wind Deity.
