That's how they made it in the drama. He was pretty manipulative in the book and approached Jin Mi with the intention of using her. They victimised him and painted a rather detailed pitiful picture while making Phoenix dumb and weak and not someone worth rooting for. I love Night as a character. And the actor playing him has captured his emotions beautifully. But I cannot bring myself to ship Night with Jin Mi. I don't blame you. Without reading the novel I might have fallen in love with Night as well. Phoenix was pretty much a side character in the drama with significantly less depth and history
