yes indeed!! in my country too, France, the hype around creating them died in the 2000's but we do listen to a lot K-pop now
and you actually see a lot of fan of idols depiction in Kdramas!! even a lot of Korean actors are current or former K-pop artists

Yes Boybands and girlbands are a really huge thing in South Korea and the fan culture around it is really something, Their job is referred to as idols and their industry K-pop! it's pretty common for middle school to college students to be into it and they have a very unique operating and marketing, The ethic rules they have to follow, The trainee system(boot camp like preparation before debuting, it can take weeks to years), the lightsticks, the photocards, the physical albums shaped to a concept, membership kits, Aegyos, fansigns, music shows, curated contents that is specific to them etc....
