I could say that this show could have been 10 episodes but there’s something to be said for Japanese dramas that are only 4 episodes long. The stories are more honest, don’t shy away from the dark side of human lives, and tell a more straight forward story.
I unfortunately watched the Netflix version first. Then saw the terrible reviews. I forgot about it for two years then found the 2015 version after seeing Kento in Todome no kiss. I did miss William Dafoe as Ryuk, but enjoyed the story so much more. Now I’m watching the anime and find the extra bits left out in the live action helps complete the whole story.
I really like the older dramas. As I put it they are not as shiny or more accurately, censored. Coffee prince is a great example. But one new drama that flipped the rom-com story was My Secret Romance. It was a nice change. Unfortunately I do find myself going to Japanese stories to get ones that are in imperfect worlds. They have unique secrets and families are fight. Sometimes they even are more understanding and lie for the greater good. I just finished watching Spring is Here. It’s short but a great example of how it’s a good thing that each culture (Chinese, Korean, and Japanese) has their own story ideas.
It jump started most of the actors careers and I would love there to be a sequel.
