Not every character is a white, pure and innocent. Yes, they made horrible mistakes, yes they had awful pasts and yes, they're villains and criminals. This story isn't about finding forgiveness, it's about learning from your past, accepting it and moving towards future. Circumstances shaped ZZS and WKX into who they are, they thought they're going to die but they both managed to find a better ending. Life works in mysterious ways and it gave them another chance. A new life.

I really like Muren and Licheng's relationship and their progress, but Yongjie is making me really uncomfortable. At this point, I'm skipping all his scenes and I NEVER skip scenes in any series. That's how disturbed I am.

You are definitely right. In the drama they softened ZZS's character by a large scale, he is definitely warmer, more remorseful of his past actions and obviously kinder to WKX. And yes, the plot progression is quite close just with different sequences, they changed up the order of some events and dialogues but overall it's pretty close and faithful to the source. And some of the added stuff made the drama much better, like ZZS's and WKX's past connection.
