She is prositute Wei. She gave her money to buy herself freedom.
she is not a prostitute, “妓” in classic Chinese literally means female artist who provide service to man

the high-end 妓 does not provide sex service, rather singing/dancing, and the customer is usually rich/powerful man who has a high-end needs

while the low-end 妓 has no real skill, so sex is only thing they can provide

still, sex or not , “妓” has a very low social status, this is why "man niang" as a street singer is also considered a impossible match for GTY by his father

can someone please tell me what the correct ending is? is it 73? 76? 79? I am confused!
TL;NR
if you watch it on viki (the 73 version), you don't miss anything

there is supposed to be 3 versions:

A) tv version, 78 ep, this is what you see on tv in China (more number of episode but shorter time per episode, a bit of content is cut, because tv station want to show more ads.)

B) "internet" a.k.a."dvd" version, 73 ep, this is what you see on viki.com (or Chinese stream website e.g. iqiyi.com) (this is the version you should watch, because nothing is cut)

C) a "rumor" director cut version, 78 ep, (N.B. no official confirmation yet) (according to rumor, this version has more content than the internet version, because the production company want to give some incentive to people who already watch the show to buy the direct cut version) (this version does not exist on the internet yet)

on youtube, both tv version (78) and internt/dvd (73) version exists (but it is regional locked)

Feb 2nd - Did not mean to be of distraction -- just found an article which I hope some of you may share & I do…
This is literally how fake news works

Chinese A post some random thought on weibo (Chinese Twitter), B translate it in English as "rumor" , then picked up by C but the "rumor" is dropped then it passed to D , D should verify the "news" before pass on (easily achievable using Google translate), but choose not to

If what you read is true, you don't read it from some random site, you will find it on Wall Street Journal
