I have seen Zhang Ling He first in Madam Homes (a costume drama; in fact with Sabrina- the one who is playing Shi Mei) and the other one was a modern drama 'Flourish in Time'. He is good with his expressions.
But as you said hairstyle and costumes, I agree. They are a big turn off if not right..
