Anyone who has read the books know the real identity of Zhang Qi Ling? I mean he is so mysterious, and I would…
Here's what I know, which might be a little bit wrong in the details because the last few books haven't been translated into English: There's a powerful magical secret hidden behind a set of bronze doors in Changbai mountain. The Mystic Nine (headed by the Zhang family, including the Wu, Hou, and Xie families) was created to protect this secret, but all the Nine EXCEPT for Zhang have abandoned this calling (and mostly forgotten about why they were created, too, I think). The Zhangs were the head of the Mystic Nine because they knew the most about the secret which somehow led to them becoming immortal. Zhang Qiling is the head of the Zhang family and possibly its only survivor (though Tomb of the Sea has Zhang Rishan, so maybe not) after the rest of them were slaughtered. ZQL is trying to retrace his steps through tombs he's been in before, knowing that something important lies at the end, because he will eventually find the bronze gate and realize he's supposed to protect what's inside.
Unfortunately, the way that the Mystic Nine protect what's inside is that one person has to go inside the bronze gate and stay there, alone, for ten years to guard the secret. Part of the reason the Zhang family has declined is that they were the only ones doing that anymore--each of the Nine families was supposed to send one of their sons to the gate every ten years and rotate between families. It was supposed to be the Wu family's turn--which means Wu Xie. Instead of letting Wu Xie lose his innocence, and ten years of his life, alone behind the bronze door, Zhang Qiling takes his place and vanishes for ten years. The plot of Tomb of the Sea is Wu Xie trying to defend the secret against forces outside the door while Zhang Qiling defends the secret from within the door, so that when ZQL returns home after ten years he won't have to keep fighting. (I think.)
Long story short, ZQL is an immortal man (we never find out how old exactly) with amnesia, only(?) survivor of a once-illustrious family who received immortality in exchange for protecting a powerful secret (which we never find out). He knows he has an important calling but he can't remember what it is, and that's why he's going through these tombs with Wu Xie and Pangzi.
Just started this series, and I'm loving it so far! Just to confirm, is this the correct chronological order:…
You're correct! The order is this:
Prequel book --> The Mystic Nine Book #1 --> Lost Tomb 1 Book #2 and Book #3 --> Lost Tomb 2 Books #4-9 --> No drama adaptations (yet) Sequel to original book series/Sha Hai, set ten years later --> Tomb of the Sea Sequel to Sha Hai/Tomb Notes Restart, set 3 or 4 years after Sha Hai --> Lost Tomb 3 (with Zhu Yi Long)
idk if she's gonna die but she's still alive in the latest released episode

Ah Ning dies in Book #5. She's bitten by a poisonous snake. She won't die in this series, but she has already died by the time Tomb of the Sea starts.
