Editorials I can't believe they pulled it off
This is my first time watching a long-form version of this type of show. I usually encounter them on youtube, those slop throwaway films you watch when you're bored or whatnot.
The story surprised me because I thought it was going to be some Republican Era Military/Politics, which it is, and it has mystery elements in it, but it also has superpowers. How do you like that? They were kinda clickbaiting at the beginning because, after setting up the story as Action/Supernatural, they segue into Politics/Mystery in the middle, and during that time I was like, "What's the relation of this to that monster stuff in the beginning?" After building up, they come back to Action/Supernatural at the end.
The superpowers are what caught me off guard because when i saw them throwing powers and shit, that's when I was like, "Oh? It's actually like those slop chinese films on youtube, but longer." And i know that sounds like a diss to this show, but what I find interesting is that it's actually GOOD. It's not a 10/10 for me, but legit it's good. Some superpowers are ridiculous, but I'm kinda like, whatever. They're really using this aspect to their advantage, especially when it comes to plot conveniences.
The Pacing is good. Because of the mystery, it's slow, though it can be boring sometimes, whenever they try to segue. Since it has flashy Action/Superpower, it's not like trying to be just fight, fight, fight to keep people like me entertained. Its main focus is the mystery aspect of the overall plot, though I don't like it whenever they overexplain shit sometimes, and I also have some questions unanswered.
The writing is good, though sometimes it's over the top and ridiculous. Especially since there's a comedy aspect and I know comedy is always used to balance other genres, but I can't help but roll my eyes sometimes, as it's not always in the perfect setting or timing. Over the course of the show, the writing becomes stronger and tighter.
The acting is great, of course. You can't go wrong in that lineup. Bro! Zhang Xin Cheng and Ding Yu Xi's chemistry is so good, but sometimes, I don't know if it's just me, but Ding Yu Xi mogs Zhang Xin Cheng. Their screen presence is clashing, especially in the later parts. I think it's got to do with Yu Xi's character having a strong role in the story. I won't forget Jiang Pei Yao, one of my favorite actresses. She's such a good actress. Her beauty is such a fit for this kind of setting. I still have a lot of questions regarding her character.
The CGI is janky, but I'm trained by those slop movies, so I'm immune to it at this point, and you can't hide the AI shit from me, though it's very minor. They use AI montages for time skips and that narration with Art Slides, though I hate to admit it's a pretty aesthetic art.
Overall, it's good. I recommend you watch it. I think I might have found my preferences over those Fantasy Shows.
