From the very beginning the producers found Xian Xia was most popular among teenagers, thus Xian Xia drama has been made to target only at teens - logic, conversation, interpersonal relationship, world view, casting, acting style…all in line with teen cognition. The problem is that this largely fossilizes people's expectations of a Xian Xia drama, and those who have outgrown adolescent interests and cognition say NO to the whole genre coz they couldn't relate. TMOPB became an international mega hit largely because the director is able to think out of the box, and combine Xian Xia with mature protagonists performed by relatively mature leads in adult acting styles, telling a story that grown-ups can relate, too. L&D's casting shows a similar ambition. It's just people in China are too much influenced by previous XianXia dramas to break out of the preset expectations to embrace sth. new, esp. at the first couple of episodes. In contrast, I find international viewers, whose expectations of this genre have not yet been fossilized, accept this drama with no difficulty. Anyway, I think this is a really good attempt.
