For those who have read the novel and watched(/are watching) the drama, which would you recommend starting with?…
The novel is definitely better. The drama made some important changes to the plot and ruined the story imo. I'm not even talking about the BL stuff. The manga version is very close to the novel from what I can tell so far, but it's going very slow (only in Yi City arc now). The anime is very good as well. Someone said the audio drama is even better than the novel. But I didn't go over it so I cannot comment on that. The drama itself is ok. But cannot compare with the source material.
agreed. im guessing you're talking bout the technicality side of the drama. if i may be honest, i watched the…
Let me clarify my point #1 a bit. It was obvious that in the drama the new WWX was not using MXY's body. It was his own body. The mask WWX always carried was to hide his identity as being WWX. People often asked WWX to take off his mask so they could tell if he's WWX. JC did that and he immediately recognized him as WWX. JGY did that and everybody around immediately knew he was WWX. So, that's the body of WWX himself, which implies that he didn't die. And that's consistent with what JGY said about the curse. I hope they can be more skillful and careful in making changes to original stories. Knowing what is important and don't make unnecessary changes casually, which in some cases, ruin the entire story.

1. The new WWX looks exactly the same as the old WWX (not having the same actor, that's actually in the story of the drama). That wouldn't make any sense if that's MXY's body. 2. JGY said in ep42 that the sacrificing curse is for healing an injured person. So, WWX most likely didn't die in the drama (and only in the drama). Though the drama didn't explicitly say so.

1. They made WenQing and her clan being oppressed by the main clan from the very beginning. They made everything (good and evil) black and white instead of having some grey area. This change made the altruistic act of WWX for the remaining wen’s much less altruistic (because they were indeed on the same side from start). 2. The original story was mysterious. The theme of death and darkness are always present, e.g. fierce corpse. The drama wiped that all out. Fierce corpses became puppets. What the heck is that?! 3. The Yi City arc was totally degraded in the drama (this may have to do with budget). 4. The introduction of the Yin iron doesn’t make much sense to me. WWX should be the one who invented demonic cultivation. 5. But the worst of all is that, the drama implied that WWX didn’t die 16 years ago. This ruined the whole story. That doesn’t even make much sense. In the original story, they went through life and death, reincarnation and reunion. LWJ was waiting for someone who really died and came back again. That was profound. In the drama, WWX was injured? Disappeared from the public for many years and then came back again? This little change makes huge difference.
I think KissAnime has it. Season 2 is currently airing in China and only 4 episodes of S2 are out so far (new episode released every weekend). The original name of the series is “Mo Dao Zu Shi” instead of “The Untamed” So if you search for the novel, manga, or anime, you have to search “Mo Dao Zu Shi” Instead of “The Untamed”. https://myanimelist.net/anime/37208/Mo_Dao_Zu_Shi
Because it’s an open-ended ending. He did take the role and therefore they parted ways. But at the very end, LWJ appeared in front of WWX again and we don’t know why. We only see WWX’s bright smile after he saw Lan. Did Lan give up the position and decided to go with WWX? We don’t know.
But I have to say, the anime/donghua version is way better. Especially the atmosphere. And no low-budget CG. Novel>Manga>Anime>Drama The problem with the manga is that it's too SLOW~~~ The pros: very close to the novel and very gay. The pros of the drama are the cast and sets. things I don't like: the way they changed the story, editing, directing, cg, fighting scenes.
Must Download and keep the drama for your repeats.
I read the novel of MDZS after finishing season 1 of the donghua. And then read Heaven Official's Blessing (by MXTX) after MDZS. Both are great and I cannot decide which one I like better. HOB is probably cuter. If MDZS is cloudy, HOB is sunny. Though both have very heart-wrenching moments.
It's not that I don't like Wang Yibo. He did very well in the drama. But I think he is not the perfect choice. He's a bit too skinny to portray LWJ. I think Song Weilong would be much better. He even looks like the the anime version of LWJ. And he is 185 cm, taller than Xiao Zhan (183).
Episode 38 commentsYi City Arc, Oh my heart. This part of the novel is so sad. Can you imagine the guilt XXC must…
The Yi City arc hasn't finished yet. But based on what I've seen, they will most likely screwed this beautiful story. 1. Lack of fund for CG (which I think is very important in this part of the story). 2. Changed the story (poorly and unnecessarily) to comply with Chinese censorship. And the drama seems to be suggesting that WWX didn't die 16 years ago (unlike the novel). And I am not ok with that. So I decided to stop watching the drama. Hope they won't screw season 2 of the animation because of the stupid censorship.
I have to agree with you. I watched the anime (very good) and because of that, I read the novel. Very beautifully written. But the drama is very disappointing. Obviously, they changed the story (not only the BL stuff) to comply with the censorship. Totally ruined the story imo. I am not going to continue with the drama. Now I start to worry about season 2 of the animation because it faces the same pressure from the Chinese government.

Who would want a sad ending, especially for this series.
