The unstable volume and sound output is probably due to the post production sometimes uses recorded voice to cover up some lines (which either were not delivered exactly as the director expected, or the field pick up didn't work out very well.) C-drama commonly adopt recorded voice preformed by the voice actors in the post production because of various reasons like "actors didn't deliver their lines very well", "heavy accents", "impossible environment for sound field pick up". It's kinda ridiculous, but it's been a reality for years and years. Chang'an mostly uses field pick up sounds. It is actually a rare case among the c-dramas. There are indeed some technical flaws, but I do appreciate the work of the sound unit.
