Yeah I do understand and it limits the creativity and the proper storytelling. But then they could've ended it better. I think they lack the capability to end things properly lately.

According to what I've read in a few articles and comments. They weren't able to get married because Ling Bu Yi did his revenge before the wedding and when all is well with their relationship. Since the emperor spoils him instead of killing him he punished him to serve in war for 5 years. Shao shang becomes a court lady under the Empress and get engaged later on with the scholar and then the emperor summoned Ling Bu Yi. That's enough for spoiler hope I answered your questions.
