Person Dylan Wang
I kinda like this pic. After the aggressive "Dao Ming So" effect that I am familiar to (I don't watch incomplete stories so haven't watched Ever Night) . This one gives a fresh, light vibe.

I think that's not something for us to comment on, as outsiders. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, maybe it's out of concern. But I don't think outsiders have the right to be concerned about anything in an individual's personal domain. Do remember that those who hate her will use these words and construct their opinions in a way that would harm her peace of mind.

I know everyone has a right to expression, so I won't extend on this - I don't mean offense, but apologies if I did offend you.

Which scene are you talking about? I mean I finished it yesterday and I didn't see anything of that sort so I may have missed it.

I guess I should apologize for that. I did skim through your review and just pulled out a few portions that caught my eye. Nevermind, everyone has their own interpretations, and it's been months since I watched the show. No point arguing. TC!

Title The Story of Ming Lan Spoiler
EP 1-4: Purely shit. Each episode is 44-46 minutes. NOTHING HAPPENED 1-4.Main purpose is Ming Lan's mother died.…
Slightly weird to spend so much time on things you hate - it's not really healthy, just saying.

I hope you understand that dramas in general require something called "suspension of belief" -- otherwise, there's no logical reason for the sweet coincidences that define the romance-drama world.

Besides that, most who loved the drama loved it for their own reasons - and they watched the whole 73 episodes of it. Perhaps, your issue with it being too slow is your personal preference for shorter/faster dramas? (I was avoiding it initially for the same reason but once I started, I couldn't stop - I don't think others binge-watched it like I did, but yes, they did go through the 73 episodes, and loved it regardless.)

The whole "nothing happened" thing. I get it. You go through a show. You know what's going to happen- for those who watch dramas frequently - not much is new. But each story has it's own uniqueness. You expecting a story to just say, "yeah, you know what happens now, so that's what happens" -- is slightly unrealistic. The background, I think, defines the character setting in the best way. It helps you understand the motivations and flaws of each character- perhaps you didn't like the way it came to be, it's entirely your opinion and I won't fault you for that. (If it was a class rom-com, I would have preferred to just deal with the main-lead's story and nothing else, but fact of the matter is, it's not a rom-com. It's a whimsical (fictional_ account of a girl who had learnt to hide herself at a young age. )

Also, the story, isn't entirely about Ming Lan hiding that she was smart.
In a household where people fought amongst themselves to get the patriarch's favor and benefits, Ming Lan chose to be not be a part of that tussle.
The other women didn't care about how smart she was as long as she didn't harm their interests - or got her father's attention- so it makes sense for her to not be too concerned about "who knows." She avoided outshining others since they cared about being outshined and would have harmed her.

The funny-protection scenes. Yes, they were funny and meant to be taken with a dash of humor. But, do note that being good at horse riding does not imply being a super-brave badass -- most girls, even ones good at fighting-- would be scared to walk alone at night at a time like that, esp. with all the nuisance of social-propriety that has always been prevalent.

The Ming Lan doesn't care for the new concubine- I hope you saw what was happening there. She's someone who has learnt to be closed-off. She can talk with you, smile with you, joke with you -- but that does not imply she'll let you in. Even if she cared, she couldn't show that if she wanted to protect herself. It's like, "You betray me? Fine. You don't deserve me to care about that and beg you - Why would I inflate your sense of self?"
Not to mention, she'd seen her father's harem issues kill her mother. Caring too much in that issue didn't make sense, especially since she was already the legal wife -- Do note that regardless of how the outer world saw them, the couple still had a wall dividing them - Ming Lan's instinct to hide herself and protect herself.

It wasn't until later scenes when she'd begged for the court to hear her, and almost harmed herself, that this wall breaks down. Because, it was then, that her instinct to protect just herself had transformed into an instinct to protect her own family- her husband.

When watching these dramas, note how it entirely depends on feeling that rush when you see the underlying implications and hidden meanings. It's like the character breaking the fourth wall and making you a confidant to something no one else in his world knows. As a drama watcher, try feeling that rush. Being too critical of non-issues may take away the pleasure you could've had.

Yikes. Really sorry for inflicting that upon you. I was in the post-drama high mode and generally, that's when I spout a lot of weird stuff. And now that I've safely spent a day outside of the story, I do see your point.

Don't worry. You don't owe to the drama to spend your time on it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Find something interesting that suits you. <3

Title Run On
I started watching because of the great reviews but so far I'm very bored and I'm on episode 8! Is this as good…
Honestly? It was a drama that felt like poetry, to me. Not everyone likes poetry.

You understand parts of it, even if you can't relate and you relate to parts even if you don't understand them. It requires you to be in the correct headspace and focus on the story and not on your expectations for it.

It's not really the kind of romance that we've grown used to. I'll suggest you to drop it if you haven't grown to like it till now.

Try befriending this story when you think it's the right time. When you've watched as many of your favorite tropes and want to rest a little, try this story again.

Drink it like one drinks black coffee. Slowly. Feel the flavor beneath what would otherwise have been bitter.

The story does seem slow, because not much is happening (compared to other dramas.) It's just the characters overcoming themselves without any extreme conflicts with external characters. I loved it because I related to it.
