If soulmates and visions are popular now, maybe Pha is gone because he "saw" Thanu and Wayu together, and since he always knew that it was Thanu who caught Wayu when he fell, then Pha decided that he was interfering with Wayu's happiness? Therefore he asked Thanu to take care of Wayu.
That would explain why he couldn't tell anyone the reason, just as Phai can't tell Kit about himself and Thanu (because it sounds weird). I mean, it's ridiculous reason, but at least it makes sense.
