FL and ML both had Mentors. FL her grandmother, ML his uncle. They both shaped their futures. Yes their families are toxic but they did find a refuge to survive and be able to be outside and then to see the toxic for what it was and survive.

Yes, the events have to happen anyways. The only thing she can control is the aftermath and the outcome. It's pretty tough to maneuver around trying to get a gentler outcome. Example is her Mother's death. It happened anyways but not the same way. That's why she is avoiding ML even though she likes him. The deadly arrow will get shot.
