It is what it is. All the critics aside, I think it's pretty good. Chinese dramas have their own style. A lot of stage makeup and old ways of doing things. Like the slit throat that is just a hint. No pouring blood. All the tropes in the dramas too. Who really cares? Just enjoy the effort and the story. Peace♥

If it's annoying then the script did it's job of annoying. Made you feel something. Sometimes I'm flipping the bird at some characters in some dramas as the character has annoyed me. It's fun to be engaged.

Historical dramas who are trying to be true historically will have unfettered use of historical games people played. Harems, concubines, cock fights, cricket fights are historical. Though cock fighting is still done sometimes today and have you seen the viscous dog fights? It is what it is. The censors don't allow animal cruelty. Hence newer dramas stating that no animals were hurt. Xiao Zhan and the bunnies comes to mind.

Post shock syndrome. When a character appears cold this can mean they are holding on tightly just to survive. Imagine watching as your parents are killed brutally in front of you and not to mention by someone you trusted. Survival is paramount. Hanging on to yourself not having time to grieve.
