I haven't seen all the episodes so I don't know if this happens another time, but the only advantage they had when they got ranked by popularity is class size. While practising for the theme song the classes got smaller and smaller the higher the rank which gives an advantage when being thaught by the mentors. This didn't really hinder them too much though, as they were free to go to which ever practise room they wanted and when their rank actually mattered they were sorted after their skills. Imo, being ranked by popularity was just something that taught the contestants that popularity matters in a way that didn't really affect their overall experience.
