Not sure I agree with this article at all, mostly about the fact about the no romance part. There was definitely something between Wangji and Wuxian. The CQL just had it's limits on how far it could go. Even who had not read the novel could tell that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were a thing. There may not have been a kiss but we did have the other aspects of their relationship such as Lan Wangji searching for Wei Wuxian's soul, even if the years are wrong. As well as the drunk chicken proposal.
Now, this is just my opinion but I don't think it was the boyband effect that gained Untamed it's popularity.
