It really comes down to viewer interpretation. imo, the scene in EP19 still made Flora seem subordinate. Sure, he's still her boss and Luke has praised her a few times (usually only when it benefits him... like when Flora almost left him for Alex), but it's weird and sad that she is happy and thankful that he is being nice... as if that's not something normal... 太戀愛腦了. (it's giving Fireworks of My Heart when FL is so infatuated with ML because he made her white congee...)
The adaptation romanticizes Luke's character; when he gets upset in EP17, he is still as rude and bad-mouthed as he was in EP1 (its not a 'personality'). It's been 19 eps and they are supposedly a couple for four years but the dynamics are the same as the hidden relationship in the beginning; it still feels like manipulation, power imbalance, and lack of communication and trust.
I'm not looking for perfect characters and I haven't read the novel so I can't make a direct comparison, but seeing other reviews, it seems the adaptation only incorporated some elements from the novel and the massive scene cuts for broadcasting reasons are causing the disconnect to the story and characters.
The episodes are looping; Luke spits out hurtful words, Flora gets upset and leaves, Luke realizes he needs her and pulls the puppy eyes, Flora accepts them instantly, they reconcile. Not sure how they'll play out the big breakup in the next ep with Yilia but it won't make any difference; I feel like any instances so far where they had an argument already had the potential for the breakup.
Has Luke EVER apologized? In EP17, the scene when he visits Flora at night after she was harassed by Dony and Luke yelled at her for it. Luke says "I have come to apologize" but we don't actually get a "I'm sorry...", "It was my fault...", "I didn't think of how you feel in that situation..." Did I miss something or???
Same with Flora, I'm not understanding why she wouldn't explain herself in situations. Like when her profile was used for blind date purposes without her consent, why couldn't she just tell Luke that she didn't consent to it??? Why is she just taking it on herself knowing he becomes jealous/mad and then get yelled at for it???
Not sure if it's due to the editing/cutting down of the episodes or the original script, but EP18-19 are so watered-down/filler and I'm finding myself skimming. there's only 5 eps left for them to break up, then reconcile, with a supposed HE. it's not enough time for it to all flush out.
There is no character development to Luke or Flora and it's so frustrating to watch when so much time has passed. The one time I thought Flora would stand her ground in EP18, but she still end up giving in. It feels like a repetitive cycle of toxic relationship with zero communication (In EP19 when he doesn't yell at her on their roadtrip and she's like "thank you for being so nice today, I like this style of you") (·•᷄ࡇ•᷅ )
This show had so much potential with the cast/aesthetics/music/script and was one of my most anticipated this year; I'll probably finish this with a 7.0/7.5 but i'm left disappointed.
