I think the changes are more to with China's censorship rule of not showing leads dating till the high school is over. I read it somewhere that the chinese government doesn't want youth to be distracted or inspired by "dating" while still being in school that is shown in drama. I recently saw dazzling where timelines of novel and drama did not match on when the leads got together.
