No no you are right, i think the script got lost in the romance a bit too much. Not in a sense of character development nor plot depth but more of fanservice way. It feels more of “here look at the FL and ML being cute together. Eat the romance up!”
Just finished it, i must say i’m quite disappointed with the plot. Its very lukewarm and the villain is not giving me enough hatred to feel. However, the fighting scene thooooo CHEF KITH urghhh its so good!
SPOILERRRRRR The scene when they were exposing He Rufei and Minister Xu was laughable 😭 like why do them villains just stand there making faces while they are getting cooked alive infront of the emperor?? The amount of times He Rufei keep repeating “its a lie dont trust them” like this is a scam call hahah ngl i busted out laughing! END OF SPOILERRRR
The romance was okay nothing extraordinary. Love the friendship. I think this drama is lukewarm because they didn’t have a great character depth nor do they use the villain as well as Liu Chang in Flourished Peony. Man, never have i ever wanted to study someone’s brain for science so bad 😂

Last i watched Legend of Female General which was lukewarm in plot wise, the villain was also not cunning enough but they got great action scenes so i have high hope for this drama to cure my disappointment 😌

I'm so deep in chinese dramas that I just now know this scandal exist 😂 actually thats so true, chinese drama always use their own culture instead of trying to shove diversity in a bad way into the audience faces. They know they will not do it right so better never start it at all. Instead they just show their own powerful history and culture.
However, i would say that female leads in korean drama are still more interesting in terms of character development or characteristics wise. Also the skinship in kdrama are more prevalent due to no censorship. If only china doesn't have that shitty censorship they will totally get all kill for the best asian dramas
