maybe not for long, i’ve read that they’ll also start regulating this trope in short dramas due to the widening…
yes! haha i've watched a korean drama before with an alternate/extended ending different from the broadcasted one. if i'm not mistaken, it was dream high. the dvd version has the happy ending.
On behalf of the viewers who followed the drama, we ask Hou Ying: Was Hello 1983 a happy ending?
Hou Ying replied, "I hope this ending will make the audience feel happy. At least I think the current ending makes me feel very satisfied, but everyone's understanding of satisfaction is different, so let's leave a little suspense.
Each episode begins with a scene featuring the modern-day Xia Xiaolan. How was this segment designed?
Hou Ying: This part is consistent with our overall concept. We want to write a time-travel story, so we must write about her story before she travels through time. This story is not only about Xia Xiaolan's success after traveling through time, but also about Xia Xiaolan helping Xia Xiaolan.
The choice to start each episode was for pacing considerations. Initially, we also wanted to include some flashbacks at key plot points, but as the story progressed into the latter half, with the introduction of new characters and more dramatic developments, adding Xia Xiaolan's past would disrupt the rhythm. So, we designed each episode to have an introduction to make the character's growth trajectory clearer.
Some viewers have commented that the drama has turned from a period drama into a suspense drama, including the foreshadowing of the alarm clock, which has led viewers to make many guesses about the timeline of the plot.
Hou Ying: In the original novel, Xia Xiaolan time-traveled because she was drunk, and the subsequent plot did not mention her time travel. Our creative idea was to write the time travel story in its entirety, so that the audience would remember the plot of her time travel. This inevitably involves stories in two different time periods, and we need to maintain the integrity of the story.
For example, one of my favorite time-travel dramas is called "Love Through Time and Space." It cleverly tells the story of time travel in a very complete way. In the end, the male lead travels back to the modern era with the female lead, and according to history, the male lead does indeed disappear into history. It is very reasonable and very complete.
However, this time-travel method inevitably raises some questions, such as whether Xia Xiaolan in the modern era is alive or dead, what her storyline is like, what her fate is if she stays in 1983, and what choices she makes. We hope to make the drama a reasonable and complete story by adding some details.
This process unfolded quite naturally, allowing the two Xia Xiaolans from different time periods to become a point of comparison, enabling the audience to feel the mutual redemption between the two Xia Xiaolans.
"Instead of saying Zhou Cheng traveled to the modern era to find Xiao Lan, it's more accurate to say he came to take her home."
i love this 🥺 i was fixated on the ending but now i’m rewatching their wedding. it’s so beautiful and festive! this must be zhou ye’s first modern wedding in her entire filmography, is it zhai xiao wen’s first too? they really need a second collaboration for that campus drama!
Does the novel have something on this ? Did Zhou Cheng travel into the future or was it Zhou Cheng from the 2026…
it’s been over a decade, they ought to update the rules.
not asking much but i just hope the production team releases an epilogue for this one or maybe some short bonus episodes. if they could, it's even better if we get a second season centered on their family of four + everyone. life after marriage is always satisfying to watch.
kudos to the amazing cast of dream of golden years, such a superb drama! 👏
