Went to see it in cinema. I really enjoyed it. There’s a lot of exposition at the beginning but it’s understandable in terms of how dense the worldbuilding is. The pacing in the first 1/3 was a bit lengthy imo with the bombastic action scenes but the story telling is better in the 2/3 of the movie. The CGI has its quirks so if they removed some of the action scenes, it would have been less distracting. The movie is long but it’s actually easy to follow, some of the comical dialogue is unnatural but they do very well in moments of tension and drama. Andy Lau is really supreme in this movie. Wu Jing is slightly behind but still great.
My only true gripe is that it, like a lot of Chinese dramas/movies, overuse background music to enhance emotional scenes, which would have benefited from silence imo. But overall a good watch.
Watched this today in London. Really enjoyed it and now I'm going to rewatch the drama and see if I can watch…
Same. Hope we got bluray release this time. I saw it in Bristol! The tickets in London are all fully booked, I was a bit shook but not too surprising. :))
For some reason, I'm not understanding the ending. So Wang Quansheng and Chen Yunru burn the tape and then the…
It’s complicated indeed. Remember that this movie was supposed to be 3hrs and not 1hr47 min. The basic premise is that the specific tape must be burnt for there to be no more time traveling. The incident at the building was a strange series of unfortunate event, there was really no true villain. I think Chen Yunru thought it was her that started the loop hence why she tried to kill herself whose body Huang Yuxuan jumped into, which turns out to be the catalyst of everything that follows.
Seconding Word of Honor - I didn't even watch that drama but I still saw it every where lol. I imagine The Untamed…
Someday or One Day was definitely huge. There was quite a bit of tourists going to see the filming location, especially the school before it got closed down due to aging population in that area. It's also big enough for a DVD release in Korea that cost $200. There was no physical release in any other country iirc due to huge cost of music copyrights. The production was going over-budget without proper product placements nor focus on fashion as well so there was no trends of that sort.
I think the return profit for SOOD is less on the investors but more on the reputation of the people involved tbh because of how over-budget the drama was. =))))))
A chinese IP is the worst of it's kind and this is coming from me who loves Chinese dramas. I mean, they mess…
I think you're too quick to judge especially when most of what you listed is Chinese works, which is much easier to greenlit and purchased than Japanese IP, thus sadly prone to be poorly done cash grab. Meanwhile, except for Nodame Cantabile, China has done a pretty good job adapting Prince of Tennis (it's as campy and fun as I remembered the manga to be) and a really great job with Hikaru no Go. It really just depends on how much the production team loves their source materials.
It's been a long time and my old comments were probably buried 6ft. under but I just want to say this: SDOD is amazing because it shows just enough for viewers to draw their own conclusions. The mystery and romance are good, sure but viewers shouldn't be too bogged down by the time-travel mechanics. At its core, it is a drama about acceptance of one's selves. It's important to realise that no romance should be fulfilled at the cost of others. And although WQS didn't have the same treatment as the other characters (which makes sense because his story is only known to the viewers), the fact that there are little positive changes even within despair give hope that in one of the infinite possibilities, there will be a happy ending. I've translated an interview that talks about the production team's decision on some plot points so I hope everyone will read it once you finish the drama and hopefully, clear up some of your questions. Highly recommend that you don't just binge-watch this drama, because there's a lot more to unpack beyond time-travels.
I read a review of the original source for this drama and OML, the dog blood. I’m intrigued but also petrified. Note to future viewers that the author wrote this to criticise and subvert the rich CEO romance novels at the time.
I *slightly* disagree... I don't think they returned to the original timeline. I think it was CYR's suicide the…
LZW was also listening to the tape in 2003 so he timetraveled because of that + WQS’ suicide. 2017 wise, I think since he was only occupying WQS’s body, WQS’ death just returns him to his original state similar to how HYX returned to her body when CYR died.
So I just finished episode 9 and I have Questions so please excuse the long post. So I'm assuming the Wang Quan…
It’s best that you draw out the timeline for this and I think the drama has already implied quite clearly. The real WQS is basically soul dead since he already attempted suicide when LZW took over his body. He’s permanently dead due to the airplane accident. By New Year 1999, the original CYR is dead so she’s out of the picture for a very long time. Time in this story is not linear but is a Mobius ring. It doesn’s have an end or a start unless you break it using brute force so it doesn’t matter if 2010 HYX hasn’t gone to 1998, the important thing is 2003 LZW already knows 2019 HYX in 1998 and jumps to 2010 with the knowledge that she’s a different person from CYR completely. Also, I suggest you continue watching since ep 10 explains a lot more about what happens. Me and Kumaxell did explain a lot further down in the comments so you could check that out later.
All of the above. I, personally, thought it was the most satisfying ending this drama can have. Other MDL apparently…
I haven’t watched it with subs yet so I might need to wait to form my final judgement tbf. But it’s pretty undeniable that the production team didn’t disappoint nor fail to accomplish what they said in previous interviews. My shallow side is also very happy with the ending :))) They also did say that some parts of the drama are up to the viewers to decide.
My only true gripe is that it, like a lot of Chinese dramas/movies, overuse background music to enhance emotional scenes, which would have benefited from silence imo.

I finally wrote it as I promised =))))
Spoiler alert though
