If I'm right about the scene you're referring to, this snippet from the novel (Ch 99 and 100) might help understand…
Oh yeah, definitely helped haha thanks!
Yep, the reactions of those 3 mainly made me think that it was a bigger deal than I had originally thought. Because, hey a person's life is on the line so it's only right that you do whatever you can to make sure the said person is unhurt and everyone else should have expected that too but they were still so...taken aback.
Yeah I tried to see if there was any explanation for it on the internet but I couldn't find anything so I will satisfy myself with the reasoning that it showed how lwj, one of the most powerful cultivators, did not hesitate to back off because "his" life was in danger ;-;

Yeah, I have read the novel lol but even then I had the same doubt because of the urgency in wwx's tone while saying "don't ask for too much!". I also believe that anyone with a good head on their shoulders would have done the same, but I suppose it does show how devoted lwj is to wwx.
This is going to sound stupid but uh why was it such a big deal that lwj lowered his sword back in the temple confrontation scene? And why did wwx freak out so much when lwj sheathed back his sword? Is there some lore behind it? Or is it just your normal "don't worry about the hostage and fight" thing? Is it unbecoming of cultivators to sheath their swords without fighting once it has been unsheathed? It was the right thing to do and anyone else would have done the same in that situation so I don't really understand why wwx and everyone else was like "don't ask for too much" to jgy during that scene?
I love this scene for a multitude of reasons and one of the reasons is that how lwj said "and you are truly worthy of being wei ying". Like, it's so so important for someone like wei wuxian who has extremely low self worth and thinks of himself as "disposable" to hear it from the most important person in his life, the person that the whole of the cultivation world admires that yes, he is still Wei Ying, and he is WORTHY. The poignance of this moment cannot be stressed enough.
Just came across this post and oh well, haha :')
I'm sure the older fans would love to see this! The growth <3
The cult grows LMAO
