It is actually both. He wanted to be with her in the afterlife but...he also basically said the line from the novel but it was diluted as not to make it suicidal. He meant that he might not "terminate" even after he dies. He is literally afraid that when ShenLi dies in the Abyss, there is a possibility he - in some form - might survive and be alone. He wouldn't want it, because he cannot imagine the world without her and we all know he was basically a shell of a man when ShenLi died the first time on the East Sea. He was already contemplating death when he was sitting underwater fixing her spear.
I was a bit sad that they didn't include the line he said “If you run away with someone else, I won’t be able to get over it…”. She as an immortal has an afterlife/reincarnation but not he... he, as a divine, would turn into energy and go with the wind around the realms.
