Replying to Tae Ho May 3, 2020
Tae Eul is not very logical LOL, she's a flat earther.
Hahaha. You're right. I forgot that about her. But what I meant with being logical is she can handle things like a sane normal being. Even though that she's not convinced that the earth is round, I find her skepticism still an evidence of her logic. My point is that she's not the usual female lead that are weak and useless. Let's see how the writers flesh out her character.
On The King: Eternal Monarch May 2, 2020
I just watched episode 6 and I must say that I'm liking it more and more. I have a lot of negatives to say so but I want to highlight the things that I like first. (SPOILER ALERT UP TO EPISODE 6!)
I like Jung Tae-Eul's character (Kim Go Eun). She has a strong personality that I like in my female protagonists. Not only that she is strong but she is also smart and can act with logic; being a detective really helps her character a lot. Go Eun's acting is compelling which makes all the scenes in the Republic of Korea more enjoyable.
I also like the back story Tae Eul has with Kang Shin Jae (Kim Kyung Nam). They have a legitimate friendship that has the potential to be a good romantic story. It was developed well and I can see the chemistry between them. However, since King Lee Gon (Lee Min-Ho) is the main male lead here, this tandem will not work.
Now, on to the negative parts . . .
I don't like how we are transitioning from the Republic of Korea to the Kingdom of Corea. The directors (or editors) didn't put an obvious filter to distinguish both worlds from each other. I was really confused at the scenes with Lee Rim (Lee Jung Jin), the villain of the story. I could not tell whether he's in the republic or the kingdom which really hurt my experience with watching the show.
I also found the plotlines in the Kingdom of Corea very boring. I am not even a tiny bit invested with the war that happened in episode 6; this is just a waste of screen time and could've been used to develop the more interesting plots and characters. The only time that I found the kingdom interesting was when Tae Eul came to his majesty's world. I really looked forward to her reaction to this parallel reality.
Now for the characters, they are freaking so many of them that I found it hard to track them all. It seems like characters are popping randomly without a proper introduction.; this really hurt my experience because I like to be attached and invested in all the characters even the most minor ones.
Finally, I want to tackle the romance. I have one word: INSTA LOVE. And this is a trope that I find very annoying among the movies, TV shows, and the books that I consume. I don't understand how Lee Gon developed this deep feeling for Tae Eul wherein they really haven't met yet. And when they did meet, their interactions were aggressive and unpleasant towards one another. There weren't any special moments where they just talked to develop a friendship. All Lee Gon did was to stalk and annoy Tae Eul and be an inconvenience to her.
All in all, there are a lot of improvements that can be done. The editors should put a more obvious filter when transitioning to both worlds (like what 13 Reasons Why did in Season 3). They should limit the plotlines that they are juggling; focus more on the storylines that means so much to the main characters. I'm already hooked so I guess that's a positive. I'm looking forward to the rest of the episodes and I hope it gets better from here.
