On Record of Youth Oct 20, 2020
I've watched upto ep 5 and I really really enjoyed it. The drama really speaks to me, and so far I'm enjoying most of the things. I don't like it when things meander, but I guess thats just a kdrama thing, the story is as much their families' as its the leads' - so my frustration regarding several characters and their plotlines and scenes is not too deterring right now.
What I really liked is that all characters are shown in several lights - I am not forced to choose or hate characters, and I like that. Hae Hyo's family is shown to have heart warming moments too, and it just shows that in reality nothing is black and white. No labels of economic backgrounds and professions can really define a family - each have their own struggles and joys.
Till now I can relate to most of the characters, and I like the FL a lot up to now. She is shown to be independent and not overly emotional and dramatic, and I like that. Some people do not let their guard down easily and that's okay. The only reason she warmed up to Hye Jun so quickly was because she's been his fan for a long time, so I didn't really find her behavior towards him as compared to other characters too jarring.
I feel for Hye Jun, and I was surprisingly very invested in his mom's journey too (Gosh, I'm really growing older), I loved his manager-noona - her passion and uncaring air headedness could have been irritating but I found myself enjoying it :D Idk why but I think I went into this drama knowing I will love it (I rarely watch one, otherwise anyway), and thats exactly what happened.
The struggles of earning, and providing for family, finding a stable jobs and facing reality in an unfair world are recurring themes and some may find it boring and repetitive, but I cried every time Hye-Jun's little family argued and screamed, when his mother cried, everytime Jeong Ah talked about saving money and rather not buying those lattes - because its hard to earn, and hard to save - it spoke directly to me.
(Legit bawled my eyes out when Hye Jun said BTS' songs give him hope, that it makes him want to live a better life, and that is exactly what I feel)
It feels like my own story in a way, courage I wish I had, and things I wish I'd done, still hope to do. I am glad Record of Youth happened - life is NOT a bed of roses, but it is also not ugly, there is much beauty to be found. Looking forward to catching up with the rest of the eps too when I have time!
