I interpreted as he kept his memories (due to the lightning strike) when he reincarnated, unlike Fu Rong. And maybe in previous lives before the modern one, he couldn’t find her. He’s running out of time to find her. He’s finally successful after a thousand years. I don’t like to think that he’s an immortal because that means he had to witness his children, grandchildren, ....etc. grow up & die. I don’t want him to be lonely.
