To me, Japanese is tougher since they consist of hiragana (easy), katakana (also easy) and kanji (omg seriously so difficult). Their kanji uses traditional characters, unlike Mandarin chinese which are already using simplified characters with less number of strokes (let's not talk about Mandarin used in Taiwan cos they are using the traditional characters with more strokes). Also, Japanese has LOTS OF grammar groups, I studied up to middle intermediate level and until then it was still on grammar only like futsū-kei (普通形, plain form) or meireikei (命令形 which is placed at the end of the sentence as the main verb) etc and have not even started learning kanji, plus I had NO time to study since this was during college so I quit. I googled the "kei"to show you. To be honest, I learned more Japanese from anime than from the 2-year part-time evening classes...
Mandarin/putonghua uses simplifed characters, has only 4 main tones (eg mā, má, mǎ, and mà) and 1 neutral tone (eg ma). But I find mandarin easier because I have been surrounded by Mandarin and Cantonese speaking friends and distant relatives so the words are somewhat familiar to me. So I never took any classes and only depended on Google translate and dictionaries.
