I was ultimately fine with the male lead, but his character arc felt underdeveloped and somewhat flat. With his…
You are talking about the character himself, and I am talking about how I think the character was meant to be portrayed. I believe the character was meant to be complex given his backstory and everything he had to bear. Unfortunately, it was not portrayed well so it felt very one-dimensional and ended being like a jerk.
If they just wanted to portray him as a jerk, then there was no need to add the extra layers.
Binged up to episode 10 and I’m really enjoying this drama with its interesting plot so far. I love the contrast between the two female leads—their personalities and their styling. Completely different vibes, and both pull their looks off perfectly.
And the male leads… let’s be honest, they’re talented eye candy as well. I don’t like Tang Xiao Tian’s character (purely because he’s the villain lol), but he still looks so fine. And Cheng Lei—yeah, very hot.
The humor has been nicely on point, and I’m hoping it doesn’t veer too dark later on. Also really enjoying the romantic undertones between the leads—it keeps things interesting.
I like FL here a lot, such a cool character. And her willing to put herself at risk to test harmful stuff or her…
Same! She’s so bold and confident, which makes her really fun to watch. Yes, she’s reckless—and in a different show I’d probably be rolling my eyes nonstop—but here it just works. She’s exactly the right kind of chaos for this story.
Also, is The Apothecary Diaries only an anime for now? I tried looking it up on MDL and didn’t see a movie or drama version, so I’m guessing that’s all there is so far?
Our lead couple is simply too smart for everyone else—so it’s easier to call it “magic” or say Xiao Huai Jin ran a divination. People accept that far more readily than actual logic.
Episode 12 was funny, with Li Pei Yi casually using her master as a guinea pig—zero hesitation, zero guilt 😂
It’s also interesting how people go to such extreme lengths just to get Li Pei Yi’s attention so she’ll investigate the cases...
Finally, they are showing a litle more of Shin Jeung U's backstory...I wonder what covert operation he is running. I love a smart FL - the way Geum Bo tracked down Yihpee but honestly, I wouldn't be using anything at work if I was going to do something so secretive.
Yeah - the moment he appeared when they interviewed Luo Chuo, it's like a Villain spotlight on him...lol. So far, I like the way the show is executing the mystery of "how to get there"...
Cute, drunk Xiao Huai Jin providing a little comic relief amid all those vile cases. The little “heart-to-heart” was sweet—and I loved how XHJ showed his desperation to crack Li Pei Yi’s walls while keeping his dignity. Wang Xing Yue did well - not many actors can make emotional vulnerability look so composed.
What's her relation with the emperor? Is the emperor her paternal uncle??
I think you were on the right track that he knows the true reason behind her parents deaths. Maybe he’s feeling guilty about it because he could have caused it
Bai Lu’s portrayal of Pei Yi is chef’s kiss. The way she stands up to the Emperor and even scolds him…she just radiates confidence and strength while looking gorgeous. And the Emperor? I love how he treats her! He openly admits he favors her, yet still loses his temper at her like a father who’s proud, worried, and absolutely annoyed at the same time.
I love the dynamic between Li Pei Yi and Xiao Huai Jin. They’re both so sharp and so perfectly in sync that they read each other’s minds—and then patiently translate their brilliance for everyone else 😄
Of course, that psychic connection isn’t always flawless. The moment Pei Yi couldn’t follow Huai Jin’s chain of deductions and basically told him to just say he knows magic...Lol...
First 4 episodes were solid. The leads are doing a great job, the plot is engaging, and I really enjoy stories where both main characters are brilliant and understand each other so well. Looks like they are setting up for some conflict between the two though.
I don’t find his portrayal this far as sulky. I think it’s more guarded. And the fact that he bickers with…
I’ll check out your musings since I like how insightful they are. Just like your reviews :) I guess one story line would be them working together. I like the concept of her being undercover. Better than a girl gone astray and then turn straight because of love.

I don’t know - he’s just got this depressed vibe. I know why he’s like that but it’s not appealing to me. That’s ok though since I’m not watching the show for him. It’s all about the cases. I just don’t want the show to end up being about their conflicts… girlfriend in the underworld ending up being his moral dilemma…stuff like that. Anyway, yes - glad that the second case was solved. What started as revenge became just blind murder…so sad.
So after ep 6, Gong Jun is not drawing me in: in fact he’s bringing me down with his constant mopey sulky look. I know he has a troubled background with unresolved issues with the FL but I hope this doesn’t play out to be all about the romance. The cases are the ones that interest me now and I really hope that is what the show’s main focus is. Hopefully the no romance tag means just that.

I’ve been excited about this pairing since SOKP.
