In the episode Vegas attitude towards his brother Macau washostile. But novel Vegas loved his brother.
I was a bit unconfortable with that too, but imo even tho Vegas loves Macau a lot he truly thinks like that deep down... that he has no one... and that Macau would leave him one day. This scene shows for me the need for romantic love Vegas feels...

Besides what @Bella_x said, I also think Pete may be too confused and actually think he doesnt want to stay bc of his family and friends plus the fact that he is discovering his sexuality
