He has grudge abt the past, abt his family masacre.... (he's only 7-8y.o when it happened). after the tragedy he ran with "his mom" to seek the emperor.
then he saw "his dad" lives so well and has new wife. but the truth is the person people knows as his dad is actually his uncle and his sick mom is actually his auntie, this happened bcuz his aunty switch LBY with her dead son (in the novel it wrote that LBY and his cousin has the same appearnce).... then he began lives in the palace, which also get bullying from the prince and people of the palace....
these experience make him harsh and hard and cold then he met CSS with whom he fell in love at first glane.... he love CSS but he still has grudge abt his past
this drama and novel are both written beautifully, love is warm yet bitter. it takes so much effort to find the middle path.

no you're not..... but I think LBY is kind of confused too, CSS never tell him before that she has an affection to him. don't forget that LBY is a lone man, he always solved his problem alone. so I think he wants to solved CSS problem too.
