Interesting, I also thought this "duality" could be because of the poison. As you wrote, until the end he will live only in the moment! It seems to me that partly the guilt he felt lessened, because he realized that people themselves didn't blame him and that they continued to support him, even after knowing the truth, and also because the one he had as a brother (with whom he thought that he failed), in fact, wasn't a good brother. Maybe that's why there was this "light". Still, none of this is enough to make him want to change his behavior, or even continue living. He continues to consider his task complete.
